There are stacks of books out there FULL of info on the business side of all things music.

In the greek language, there's a saying that roughly translates to:

Books are cool.

But I learned most of the stuff about licensing through good old trial and error. I have signed all kind of crazy deals and I don't regret any of them. I would not recommend that most musicians follow that path, but it has worked for me. Most could learn from my "errors".

But that's a whole 'nother conversation. Sorry for hijacking the post.

Im trying to understand something and don't get all the focus on the money thing ...

So re : ala's,

i've heard it say that often here at Taxi that a reason for having Ala's is sometimes because the soup wants a tune by an artist but ..

a)the artist is charging too much or
b) doesn't want to licence the song for that use for some reason, legal or personal

he is a vegan and is being asked if he would like his music on a fried chicken advert ....

So to me, and the bit I'm not getting about this race to the bottom bit is ..

1) The money is there if the tune is top ( point a )
2) Its not dictated to us, we decide ultimately whether to licence or not , work a deal out at that time .. can always say NO

And the biggest question in relation to the listing is

What are the shows about!!??

In a listing we get a bit of that , eg, show to be used for parenthood etc ...

Its a point that has always got me wondered , write submit forget is pants ..

get inspired about the project, write, submit, forget .. is better

Anywhooo, thems my thoughts on being able to answer the question Michael was kind to ask

Well, if you're in it for the money, you can write off your cable bill as a business expense; it's called research. Might not work quite as slick in the UK.

aye that is neat, mojo. And would be the first expense to claim!

but passing wax views, over the internet, on the economics of the music industry, shows an already achieved level of affluent privilege ( relatively ) in itself.

I must admit it seems like this to me too. Maybe its because we're English .. the UK scene just doesn't operate in the same way as far as I know - keeping up with all of this sometimes seems a bit like a theoretical exercise. What we hear over hear on TV just doesn't translate ... the smaller, national market is dominated and driven by a different business model altogether. It seems to be just another part of the music industries promotional machine - managers and promoters doing pan-media deals rather than opportunities for music-libraries.

You should have seen how slick the promo was for Foster the People over here last year for example .. ... Radio 1 session -> track used as part of o2's national TV ad campaign -> press + interviews -> high on the bill at Reading + other summer festivals -> band broken ....

I'm truly blessed to be living in the economically depressed Rust Belt; living expenses are about a quarter what they'd be on either coast. This is a very large country, with broad demographics; if I had children living at home, I'd be well below the poverty line, but this reflects a common standard of living that much of the world can't match. What does it say about America that our poor are obese? All things considered, you should be thankful for your National Health; if I get sick, I'll lose my home. I'll probably have to take a second, summer job to make this year's Rally, cuz it's looking like the wife will need her other hip replaced, sooner than later. It is indeed a relative privilege. ;)

Hope everything works out well for your wife, Mojo.

Complete respect for surgeons, doctors, nurses and emergency workers, true superstars

Understand what your saying about the UK national Health, but it is still something brits pay for out the wage every month ( forced, taken out beforeheand ) : )

By the looks, it's pretty much the same as the usa 'insurance' system with just a different name / way of paying for it.

Except, if it's non profit so you don't have slimy capitalists bleeding it dry, forcing people to be turned down for issues and then going bankrupted over something most likely out of their control. And those are the folks lucky enough to have made something before they got unlucky. What about the folks that can't sell off the house for that kidney transplant or heart surgery, etc...? Sorry, but you're not covered, sorry you're just gonna have to die... /nurse yells out... NEXT /nurse whispers one last thing to the man... under this capitalist regime we don't have to give a rats a++ about you. Next time maybe vote democrat at least they give a f++k. OH but you're probably not gonna make that vote... good luck with that. /que evil laugh.

Insurances companies are making money off peoples potential misfortune. Imho it should be a group effort to assist those down and out and find themselves unlucky winners of a crap lottery. Why should anyone be profiting off that?... ya know?! May as well as sell water for $20 a bottle to thirsty people after a hurricane comes through. It's no different imho.
