Dispatch worth it .... is it a misprint??

Post by arkjack » Thu Dec 06, 2007 4:14 pm

I noticed Ted's post about dispatch being of questionable value. I just got emails of dispatch listings that say" they are offering $6,000 to $8000 for this cue". That's some serious CA-Ching. Unfortunately, the taxi office on the west coast just closed. I want to double check that thats really the offer. Seems a bit generous, but if its accurate, I would say dispatch could offer some decent ROI.ArkJack

there are two separate listings with that same dangling carrot, and one for a similar amount came down the pike a few weeks ago. I'm pretty sure those are accurate.

Hey ArkJack,It sure is tempting to fork over the cash for dispatch and take a crack at one of these. The thing that I just discussed with someone else about this is that if this music supervisor is offering this much for a cue, you can best believe they have all of their feelers out with other venues besides TAXI. This of course then raises the bar, still if you have something that fits this listing, why not swing for the fences.Cisco

FWIW I don't think Ted meant as a general statement. I think he was saying for somebody who has a really small catalog and is unable to produce broadcast quality music to order it may not be worth it.For anybody who has a decent catalog and/or can produce quickly it's definitely worth it. My most lucrative Taxi gig so far came from a Dispatch listing.Cisco is right though, whenever a big dollar figure is attached to an opp you can be sure competition will be fierce, both inside and outside of Taxi, so your chances on getting your hands on the prize will be relatively smaller.

I spent a bit of time writing a piece for it in the past 3 days. I am up to a little better than rough draft. Seeing the overall limitations I encounter in my production, like clear signals, on time in tune instruments, and on key vocals, its a good reality spank to see what its like to even try. I don't think the piece will be ready by tomorrow, and I'll probably conclude there are too many glitches to get it past a bar that as you pointed out is going to have a lot of people more talented than me submitting. But like I said, its a good exercise in spanking yourself just trying.....ArkJack

Yes, I saw the listing a couple weeks ago with the same amount listed looking for a song like Green Day's "Broken Dreams." The money was so good I tried to write something, but Green Day isn't really my thing. However, since the John Denver vibe is more my thing, I wrote and submitted two songs for this one. (Well, wrote one new one and re-wrote an older piece) But, as Matto points out, that kind of cash will mean my production skills will be put to the test to stand up to the real marketplace. Although, as Matto has pointed out before, even if there are a hundred great songs to choose from, if you can be in that group the odds are a lot better than the lottery.Anyway, I was suspicious of the extra cost of dispatch at first, but I find I really enjoy the challenge of the short deadline. Whether or not I get rewarded from these specific dispatch listings I'm building my writing and recording skills, as well as my over all catalog.

I guess I had to deal with the "must not have been meant to be" thing today. I finished mixing the track last night and burned the transfer files this morning. Then got a clear spot in my schedule around 1:30, and went to the editing software for cleanup on the track. Converted the file to MP3 around 2:45 and logged onto my taxi page to start uploading. Phone rang with a client on the other end and had to take the call. Call was done at 3:01PM, just as the file finished uploading. Figuring I was a minute late on the deadline and feeling less than 100% confident about the track I figured the submission wasn't meant to be. But like I said before, the exercise of spanking yourself to get a piece ready on short notice was great practice for future opps.ArkJack

My most lucrative Taxi gig so far came from a Dispatch listing.i'm considering the dispatch program as well..as Matto mentioned above I fall into the "decent catalog" group. I use an outside studio and that takes time to arrange schedules & such..I don't currently write for listings..I have songs that I "hope" may fit listings..does dispatch seem worth it for me ?thanks..john

You have high quality music and I'd bet it would be a good investment for you. Dave
