Apple's site has a page comparing specs and you can see how much ram each one can take. I believe the MacBook pros max out at 8.

Here's the page for the 15 inch model: http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/specs.html

If you want more ram, you'll have to go with iMac or Mac pro.

I still run 32 bit but with kontakt it's possible to go beyond the memory limitations with their memory server.

Also make sure everything you want to use will run in 64 bit

Yeah - we've come a long way.

My First Mac came with 1 Meg (I eventully went up to 4 megs) of RAM and a 20 Meg Hard drive (of which the salesman said - "You will never need more than 20 megs)

Image

It ran system 4, then I upgraded to System 6 - which could run Multi-finder. That allowed you to run 2 programs at once - if you had the memory. I can remember having a sound program that would play back "samples" for regular system sounds; beeps and what not. There was a setting for it to play a sample when you started the Mac. If I picked a sample that was too long (like, 3 secs) my Mac would run out of memory as it was starting up and go into an endless loop of startup, chime, start to play the sample and crash.

Oh, the good ol' days. Funny how we keep repeating; 32/64 bit is similar to finder/multi-finder change over.

From what I understand, Play is bad for everyone, and I don't think it is 64bit native yet.

Mazz has some Play instruments, so maybe he will chime in. But I know he has said around here that it is a dog and he doesn't use it much anymore.

Seems like I heard that Play 3 which is 64bit is going to ship with Hollywood Brass, and I would guess that everyone will be able to update when it comes out. But, I haven't seen anything else about 64bit Play engine. Plus, I haven't heard anything about iLok going 64bit, which limits any software using it to 32 bits as well.

ahh, so many issues... so little time.

Funny thing. My First Mac SE cost me around $3100 ( I took out a loan from my credit union). My 1980 Honda accord, used, cost me about $2600!?!
