Re: don't know where to start
Your best bet is going to be to find a collaborator that can build your beats and produce your track. In R&B that generally constitutes a 50/50 co-write, but you'll find two heads are better than one... well, assuming your co-writer knows what's up. HA!If you really want to learn to do it yourself, there's no quick way to learn... I think the easiest way (but certainly not the cheapest) to get into it is to get a Mac, and dig into Garageband (which is included with the computer). You can pretty easily build songs out of the included loops and sounds. Good luck!

Re: don't know where to start
a good book can also go a long way, if you look around, you will see a bunch of programs mentioned, some are superior to others in diff aspects, honestly its less what ya do it with and more how you do it in the end, but if you try out a few demos and stuff, like pro-tools free and the other demo's, you will kind of find one that fits, and then I would suggest getting a book on it, but like stick said, knowing a few people who use it and can help ya with it will go a long way too
