Don't Leave Me Alone With This RoomHe offered her his last red cent, but after what he'd already spentshe was sure he had no intent, of so much as kissin' herand she knew those dark streets were rough, but often when push comes to shoveit's easier to just make love, than be a good listenershe wondered why he said he'd ask her backcould it be her cheap red wig and green contactsthen he said "mem'ries stay hidden, mornings and afternoonsbut lady after sunset, don't leave me alone with this room"purple shadows with borrowed shapes, drank moonlight from musty drapesand as he played some old tape, she thought she'd hafta dance with himbut all she could do was stare, as he sat in that tattered chair was it time or something in the air, that was holding hands with himand for the first time she sensed a lonelinessthat she couldn't reach with her bootleg kisshe said "mem'ries stay hidden, deep inside this tuneso at night when I play it, don't leave me alone with this room"she saw there on the fireplace, photos of a woman's facehe just wept about the waste, and a love that missed its golden yearsthat picture was one she'd never forget, the eyes were green...the hair was redshe shivered a while then said, "Mister, it's getting cold in here"but it was more than pictures cooling the airother chills seem to whisper from pillows and chairscos mem'ries stay hidden, in traces of old perfumehe told her after sunset, don't leave me alone with this roomwhen he left to bring back firewood and wineshe thought of love freed from the chains of timeand how her life had been mostly just a liecos when true love is made...it's made to never dieher conscience stayed hidden, mornings and afternoonstill she said "take back your money and don't leave me alone with this room"(c)2006 Robert George
