dreams & drama -I need fresh ears :)

Post by hummingbird » Sat Aug 23, 2008 11:05 pm

Sorry I haven't been around much this week, just spent some time trying to catch up on the forum & listen to some pretty good tracks. You guys have been busy while I was away!Got two things to throw at you, that I've worked up the last couple of days. Choose one, or listen to both, whatever you like...Sea Dreams - soft ambient electronica, I improvised with the woodwind 3 or 4 times and then took snippets and added them to the piece. I'm wondering if that works, and if it sounds broadcast quality, ready to be thrown in a film? Or is it really not that great... http://www.vikkiflawith.com/audio/VIKKI ... ms.m3uLost Child - I'm scoring my first film right now, a tiny little short indie film, here's the underscore for the first scene. I wanted it to be contemporary but have a sense of underlying tension and darkness. I think this track is nearly finished.http://www.vikkiflawith.com/audio/VIKKI ... ummin'bird

Hi Vikki,I just listened to Lost Child. I like the texture and the percussion track does give a sense of tension. It's a good sounding track. Depending on how dark you want it to be, you could turn some of the subdued major tones into minor - like at :17 you have a major third against the pedal tone. But perhaps it is dark enough as is for the context of the scene?Good work! I'll listen to the other track a little later.

hi vicky--yeah, i too wanted to go right to the score tune, never "met" anyone who's lucky and talented enough (but there may be more of you guys here!) to score anything (legal...)if beat is what you're after with this opening sequence, you've succeeded very well. most of the rest, except the cool ending highlighted, is backup to the beat, in my ears. i like it!the best, that's all my limited abilities can muster on this one, warren

Hi VikkiListened to SeaDreams… Your mixes are so powerful now. There is something much more 'cinematic' in them. Are you doing something different with panning & separation? This is another solid piece. The recorder gives it a nice “sea” texture. Good stuff! I can’t see any reason not to pitch this! You’ve come a LONG way baby!!CYA in about 11 weeks!! Casey

Thanks Melissa & Warren, Casey & Roadrunner. Appreciate the feedback. I listen to things so many times I just can't hear the little details anymore. Thanks for your time & thoughts

I liked Sea Dreams... nice and atmospheric.I'd cut back on the breathy pad a bit as it appears too often IMO.Lost Child doesn't have feelings of tension or darkness to me, but it may well work with the scene you have.

These sound very cool! I'm just now coming up on my 1st anniversary here at TAXI, and I have to say that your stuff has progressed HUGELY in the short amount of time that I've been around to hear it. At first they generally sounded (to me at least) like really cool ideas that just weren't quite there in terms of overall execution, but now the quality of your mixes, sounds, everything; they all sound ready to drop right into a film or TV show. Great work!

Listened to Sea Dreams. Nice soundscape, but I thought the direction was a little wayward. The recorder has a nice feeling, but it should be used with some emotional vibrato. I guess it's a patch. I play recorder as well as flute. I'd track it for you if you want. just a thought. Wig

WigIt's actually me playing the recorder. I improvised over the bedtrack, so I wondered if it would feel 'wayward'. I used to play flute & piccolo, don't have any at the mo, but I have recorders and penny whistles. And a harmonica, but I don't play that none too well, ha ha.
