EastWest Play crashes after system migration (Mac OS 10.6.4)

Post by lowden2000 » Sun Jul 11, 2010 6:02 am

Hi Guys,

Long time no see - I was traveling for a couple of months and look forward to being more communicative again .... Along those lines:
Help!
I just upgraded to a new 17 inch Macbook Pro Core i5 and used time machine restore to transfer my system from my older Macbook Pro (Core 2).
Play worked beautifully on the old system.
After system migration, Play crashes any time I attempt to open it, whether it is in the standalone version or as a plug-in. No error message, just a complete crash and I need to force quit.
I attempted the following, all to no avail:
- I uninstalled Play using the uninstall assistant, the reinstalled with the latest installer
- I erased all Play related prefs and system entries on top of using the uninstall assistant, then reinstalled (which should be like a clean install)
- I tried installing with my original discs

All of this didn't work. Everything else runs beautiful on the new system, so I am confident that there is a way to iron this out.
I assume that there are some entries in the system that I might need to change or erase before re-installing Play.
Thank you so much for your help.

Exact config:

17 Inch Macbook Pro Core 2.53 Core i5
Snow Leopard 10.6.4
4 GB Ram
7200 RPM 500 GB drive

Other libraries installed (some of them):
- Kontakt 4
- Superior Drummer
- EZ Drummer with all expansions
- Korg Legaciy Edition
- Dimension Pro
- Sampletank 2
etc ....

Best,
Dirk

Are you running the latest PLAY Update? Latest is 2.09 and supposedly fixes some Snow Leopard issues.

Hi Keith,

Thanks for the quick reply!
Yes - I tried re-installing with 2.09 .... just crashed when attempting to launch.
I'm a bit worried about this as there is not even an error message that would give me some sort of lead as to what is wrong ....

I'm on an older Mac, so maybe this is a dumb question, but is there a chance that Time Machine rolled back any of your drivers?

Hey Mojobone,

Thanks!
No - not a dumb question whether Time Machine might have rolled back some of my drivers ...
I am hoping to find out what elements (prefs, config files, etc.) are crucial for Play when it's used with Snow Leopard, and then I might be able to fix those files in the system manually. Right now I am totally in the dark though.
I have a feeling that Play would run fine again if I did a clean install of Leopard (without using system restore), but reinstalling everything this way would take me about a couple of weeks - so I really hope there is a way to fix it without wiping my system and starting from scratch ....

I didn't do a clean install of Snow Leopard on my system and Play runs fine for me after I downloaded the latest version.

The soundsonline website has some tech notes on there if you've already tried installing the latest version.

It's not ultra necessary to know all the components of the software but if you do want to look, you can look in Library/Application Support and see if you can get some clues from there. Also Library/Audio/Components to see the AU plugin version, if that's what you use.

Good luck!

Hey,

Somebody on the Soundsonline forum gave me the fix - here it is as you might need it if you migrate your system from an earlier version to Snow Leopard:

<<<
I had the same problem. Here is what I did so that PLAY will open.

1. Go to MAC HD>Application>Font Book, open it up and look for any Fonts that have Yellow Triangles. This means that they are duplicate fonts, and that's the reason Play does not open. Just remove all the double fonts and that should solve the problem.

2. IF NOT, go to user/Library/Fonts, Open the folder and look for any fonts there that are duplicates of the ones in the MAC HD>Application>Font Book. Trash those also.

Here is an explanation of what's happening.

"Play is supported on Snow Leopard, however if you get the spinning beach ball upon launch it's likely due to a QT bug. This bug exists for users that have migrated from earlier operating systems to Snow Leopard and is caused by fonts that are not supported under the new OS. This bug essentially creates an endless loop and overloads the CPU causing the application to crash. Play is not the only application affected as this bug can be reproduced also with Google Earth application"
>>>

Thanks again, guys! :)

Cheers,
Dirk

ps Now I just have one more problem with my Play libraries .... none of the expansion content will load.
Here is what I just posted to the Soundsonline Forum (almost there .... ! ):
<<
Thank you again for your help getting Play to load (You rock, AI !) ...
Almost there, but now none of my expansion set instruments are loading (EWQLSO Gold Close and Surround Expansions, SD2 PRO, Choirs expansion).
I tried re-installing the expansion content, but the installer fails, even after installing the Hotfix and pointing Play to the right hard disc paths via the Browser ....
