Electro Pop vs Dance Pop vs EDM

Post by themichaelscott » Thu Oct 17, 2013 3:17 pm

I've been told several times my songs are "too pop" for hip hop or rock. I listen to a "best of the '80's, '90's and Today" radio station all day at work so I'm somewhat familiar with Selena Gomez, The Wanted, Kesha type stuff. What I'm having a problem with is the pigeonhole genres. When I look up Electro Pop, Dance Pop and EDM it's hard to pick out the features that make a song distinctly one over the other. I can separate EDM somewhat but I know there are some diehards that can give me some hints.

Thanks,

Michael

I would love somebody to chime in and answer this question for me too. I've spent waaaay too much time simply researching the difference and not enough time working on the actual new track for this listing that came out this week:
An Exclusive Music library needs ELECTRO POP INSTRUMENTALS to pitch to incredibly popular reality TV shows. Quoting the source: "I need simple and unobtrusive Electro-based instrumentals with loads of drop/hit points." He's not looking for anything dark, moody, or introspective. Keep your Instrumentals light, upbeat, with elements that deliver a current sounding Electro Pop performance. Mid-to-Up tempo Instrumentals only, please. The company splits the sync fee 50/50 with you. They'll keep 100% of the publishing, and you'll keep 100% of the writer's share. This is an exclusive deal, so your songs cannot already be signed with any other libraries or catalogs. You must own or control 100% of the Master and Composition rights. Broadcast Quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine). Please submit one to three instrumentals online or per CD. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI and must be received no later than Tuesday, November 5, 2013. TAXI # S131105EP
From what I've determined thus far, electro pop is more "synthy" and not as sub-kick heavy as dance or EDM. And, despite still utilizing drum machine sounds, the beat is closer to rock, e.g. open hi-hat eights and 2-4 snare. Electro pop is also more melodic. I site Lady Gaga, Ellie Goulding, and MGMT as electro pop.

Are my assumptions too far off?

I'm equally confused. Dance-pop. Electro-pop. EDM. Dubstep. They all borrow from each other. Though I think the key is, "can you dance to it?". If the answer is yes, you can get away with a lot of songwriting sins. Ott
