Exclusive deals...

Post by anna » Tue Jun 02, 2015 7:34 am

Good morning everyone! I have a quick question regarding exclusive deals...If a song is signed with a music library in an exclusive deal, is it the song itself that's signed exclusively to the library or just the recording of the song? Can you rerecord the song and pitch it to other libraries? Thanks!!

Generally not, though you need to check the contract and/or ask the library. The reason it's generally not OK is most (or at least a great many) exclusive deals cover both the COMPOSITION and the MASTER RECORDING. Often you've assigned the copyright of the song to the library. Some exclusive music library deals do make exceptions outside of the film/TV realm such as selling songs on CDs, iTunes, etc.
