Exclusive vs Non exclusive deals

Post by anna » Mon Aug 10, 2015 11:49 am

Hi everyone! I am wondering what your opinions are on exclusive vs non exclusive deals with music libraries. I signed 6 songs with an exclusive library about a year ago, and since then I have been opting for non exclusive only, simply because it seemed like a good idea to be able to cast a wider net. I haven't had any placements yet. Wondering what everybody's thoughts are on this. Do you have a preference for exclusive or non exclusive? What are the pros of an exclusive deal?

I've only dealt with one non-exclusive library so far, but this seems to be my preference. I'll sign some material with exclusive libraries in the future if the deal is standard, but non-exclusive just seems to be a better fit for me personally.

It's my understanding that it's wise to diversify so having tracks in both exclusive and non-ex libraries is a good thing. It's a big topic and it wouldn't take you long to find some deep threads about this topic on the forum. Personally, I worry less about exclusive vs. non-ex than the quality of the library/publisher and the only way to gauge that is through your experience and other peoples experience whose opinions you trust. I like working with publishers who believe in my music and who get me placements but those aren't things I learned over night, takes a while.
