If you can hear the difference when you A/B then that's a good thing.Cale wrote: ↑Wed Mar 30, 2022 1:56 pmMark, when I A/B to other trailers I do hear the difference but at this point I'm still trying to figure out how to get that 'next level' sound. I EQ, high pass, reverb and pan according to a typical orchestral set up. Beyond that I'm still watching tutorials on this music, strings in particular, and what else I can do to achieve more depth/height as you mentioned. Thanks!
To get to the next level I'd make sure the room you're mixing in is acoustically treated and that you have some secondary monitoring options like a mono Avantone mix cube for example. This will help ensure that we hear what you hear once the mix leaves your studio.
Try not to high pass filter stuff out your mix that you should be keeping. Whilst it can help in the right places I've heard a lot of mixes where this has robbed the track of all its power and the mix sounded better with those filters removed or drastically reduced.
For a short cut to more depth/height take a look at Leapwing's Stage One plugin. Very handy plugin... Not cheap though.
And speaking of YouTube, did you see that Marc Jovani had a 2 day live orchestral mixing tutorial on his Cinematic Composing channel the past couple of days.

I've not watched this yet but his other videos are generally great.
