This thread can tie together well with other currently active threads on these boards. First, you can see how different all our musical tastes are. But despite that, we are all in this together, trying to make it and help each other (the Karma shtick )... It also allows us to step back and think about what makes a hit song or at least one that sticks with us.Matto: You mentioned "Breakaway" as a model of a pop song. Although the Kelly Clarkson hits are not my favorite songs, I admire the pop-hit writing. I looked up the lyrics to "Since You've Been Gone" the other day and said, "wow, that's how lyrics to a hit song are written... simple, direct, and something that everyone can identify with.... and, of course, the killer chorus melody ain't chopped liver either...As a rock songwriter and a consumer, I am grateful that I have teenage kids. That keeps me from being completely stuck in the past, allowing me to recognize that there is still some good music being made. Casey

I appreciate what my kids listen to but being in a working cover band is much more expanding to my musical tastes. To actually break these tunes down and perform them night in and night out really illustrates the theory and structure that goes into them.Of course, I hate a lot of the songs we play too because I see what little craftsmanship goes into them as well. But, of course, it helps pay the bills... that's what being a professional musician is all about... Oops - wrong thread...
