Favourite commercial mixes

Post by lesmac » Sun Feb 25, 2018 1:31 pm

Any favourite mixes out there and why?

While working on a track for a listing [and missing the deadline ] I was really impressed with one of the reference tracks.
It was Mike Crossey's mix of Kaleo's "Way Down We Go"

I loved the sparseness, depth and nice warm kick and bass. The vocal was the star I guess with elements coming in and out to support it but not too many at a time.
It was the first mix that really hit me and made go "yeah I wanna do it like that"

Any one got a favourite or special one?

Aaron Neville Warm Your Heart album

a few years ago I listened to all my cd's to find one or more to find the best one for mixing reference. This is it. This is what stood out as being the cleanest and clearest and well recorded, well mixed.

I keep returning to Sting’s Ten Summoners Tales album, from the 90s. It blends both classical and rock instruments and the separation is incredible.

I think I'm beginning to see a pattern here for what people like in a mix.
