Feedback on mix for Hard Rock song
Here's the listing:CURRENT AND COMMERCIAL HARD ROCK SONGS AND INSTRUMENTALS are sought after by an established Music Publishing Company that has had great success placing songs with companies such as Sony, Warner Bros., Disney, Lions Gate, ESPN, FOX, ABC, MTV, Paramount, MGM, Artisan, New Line Cinema, Miramax, etc.... just to name a few. You can think in the stylistic range of Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Papa Roach, P.O.D., System Of A Down, Slipknot, etc. Be sure your performances sound excellent and have NO profanity at all! All tempos will be considered for this one, and you'll want to remember that these are tracks for Film/TV placement opportunities - make sure the lyrics are universal enough as to apply to many different scenarios. If instrumentals are submitted, be sure they can stand alone without vocals/lyrics - they should be interesting and exciting. Recordings must be broadcast quality, though great home recordings should be okay. Please submit 2-3 songs online or per CD. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI and must be received no later than December 16, 2008.Here's the song:Will Not Be Denied - http://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_ ... ream=trueI was going for the Slipknot vibe on this one.I'd love any feedback on the mix. I'm afraid I may have overcompressed it just a tad. Thoughts?- Big BlueUPDATE: I've uploaded a revised version, brought the vocals up a bit in the mix, and added a few dbs to the guitars in the 1k range.
Imagine a steel cage match between Daughtry, Coldplay, Paramore and Demon Hunter with Joe Satriani as the referee...

Re: Feedback on mix for Hard Rock song
Pretty cool little tune. It seems to have enough interest and hook to be fine for that listing. I don't listen to this genre of music as much as I used to, but the song definitely comes off as a bit shallow to me, but that might not matter for a film/tv placement. -Jeff

Re: Feedback on mix for Hard Rock song
Barry - I'm not sure if what I'm hearing is due to overcompression - I'm just not familiar with what that would sound like a metal tune like this (lack of familiarity on my part). What I hear (don't hear?) a "gap" of sorts between 500 and 4k - or a lack of freqs in that 500-4k range, particularly 1-2K., like everything below the cymbal range is all squished together and sucking some of the detail out of the mix, then the cymbal is "persistently" layered over all of it. The song itself, playing etc all are really well done.

Re: Feedback on mix for Hard Rock song
hey blue--this is one of the ones on the cd you gave me on "that" hard side that i actually liked!! LOL--old i am...i like this very much for the genre my friend--my only complaint, if it's a complaint-- though i can hear them most of the way through obviously, i'd bring the vocal up a bit--you do have some hooky and other good words here, no? maybe i'm just a stickler for hearing the lyrics clearly a bit more out front..--i'd also bring up the lead guitar in the break a bit as well--but of course this isn't my genre, and maybe everything being in the back a bit might be the style...that's all i got,,,great job again.yes, it's streaming again, and i'll stick with wanting to hear the words a bit more up front...powerful!!all the best, warren

Re: Feedback on mix for Hard Rock song
Thanks to everyone for the feedback, much appreciated!Jeff... the song was originally written for a "sports themed" listing a few months ago, so I tried writing this one from the perspective of a top-level NFL player. Paul... you're technically correct as when I'm singing this, my face most definitely doesn't look like the one in the avatar. It tends to be a bit more on the angry side. My wife won't be in the same room with me when I'm singing like that, it scares her.Anne... I went back and added a few dbs of EQ in the 1k range to the guitars. Does that sound better? I think I may have an issue with my mixing environment. I'm going to be having some one come over to help me apply some acoustic treatment to the room, which is severely lacking in the room right now. Warren... I agree with you that the vocal needed to come up a bit. I thought that myself but wanted to hear if anyone else felt that way too. Thanks for you feedback! And I took a bit of verb off of the lead guitar during the break section so it should be a bit more upfront now. As I mentioned in the part above to Anne, I think I have an issue with my mixing environment. So for the time being, I'm doing the best I can! Thanks again!- Big Blue

Does that sound better?Hi Big Blue,Could you show us what the guitars sound sound like if you centered that boost closer to 750Hz? Also - to be closer to Slipnot's tone - you might try a high shelf centered around 7.5KHz that is not too steep, say starting rolloff at 4KHz and bottoming out around 16Khz?I did a noisy comparison between your excellent tune and Slipnot's Psychosoci al. I played your song on Windows Media Player while cranking Slipnot's All Hope Is Gone CD through the player on Amazon.com. That's where I got my sonic comparison. It's a slightly flawed methodology but I think my ideas are in the ballpark.I hope it helps, and it will be great to hear your experiment with a slightly creamier tone. Slipnot doesn't shy away from those mids. Come to think of it... they don't seem shy about anything. Good Luck,Allen
