Hey Michael!
I'm diggin this track, I think it's pretty on point with the brief.
But I do feel that the kick and snare Sounds need to be changed.
For me the kick doesn't hit hard enough, and I don't feel like a sidestick snare is the right choice, or maybe try layering it with some different snare sounds.
Also you may want to experiment and try some lofi filters, eqs and such to give it that feel the references have.
Hope this helps.
Erik

This is a lovely bit of work, I was about to write "maybe pop in a stripped down section", but then boom. There it was.

The snare and kick definitely need more oomph. Given the genre cross over those are the biggest elements from hip-hop. Get a snare with more snap, may pop a bit of verb on there and I think you'd be golden.

I might recommend maybe adding another melodic element, purely on the basis that I've submitted similar in the past and I've been getting "is a bit repetitive" as feedback, which, lets be honest, most of those kinds of tracks are anyway. But ho hum!
