I compose mainly on keyboard, so this applies to that. If you are working with a melody, I would suggest that you try some inversions of the chords, and mess with the bass as well. For example, that C can be played C-E-G, E-G-C and G-C-E, and you can use the E or G in the bass for a nice transition sound. Elton John, Billy Joel and lots of others use that technique. I also like to throw in a 2d, or use a sus chord for similar effect. Whatever you choose, you have to like it. And as others have pointed out, there are "related chords" that can be substituted in your progression. I asked a friend, who is a great writer, for help on a tune, about what related chord I should use. He told me something that is still true. "They're all related; some just sound better than others." Ah, yes; harmolodic theory: there are no wrong notes, so long as they're played with the right intention.
