First Cubase 7 Recording/EZ Drummer/Midi Test...

Post by cassmcentee » Sun Sep 22, 2013 8:08 pm

Ok Y'all...
I finished mastering my album!
So I just upgraded my system with Cubase 7 (from my super old (as in Atari) Cubase LE)...
Took a while to get my extra VST's recognized...
Took a while to figure out how to track my guitar...
Took longer to learn the new Midi functions...
Learned how to use EZ Drummer.
Saw the Coldplay listing and used it as a little inspiration for a starting point.
...and this is what I got...

"First Cubase 7 Test"

Thanks for listening! :D

Cool, you're up and running! Nice groove on this one but I'm not really hearing Coldplay. That rhythmic synth line is not something Coldplay would do. I thought the drums could have been a bit more present, acoustic guitar was driving the bus nicely! Also, a lot of times Coldplay doesn't do the typical kick on the 1 and 3, snare on 2 and 4, kind of a signature for them in a lot of ways.

Congrats on the new rig!

Whether its coldplay if not may be debatable, but what a great sound!!! Full! Rich!! Great fun, eh?! I got the model down from yours...Elements. Great unit. Took me about a month to get my vst's in place... Cass, dies yours have an auto tune function? Where you can go in and physically change or staighten pitch? Cubase 5 had it but I don't think 7, elements does...

Your song sounds GREAT though. This new systems going to take you places!!!

It's a good track, really. I agree I would take a listen to some of the Coldplay stuff, I have more of an issue with the patch then with the melody line itself. I'm guessing, taking a shot in the dark, but something saw wave based might work better. Again, if you are going for the Coldplay thing. If not, what you have I think is fine.

Cass, what a great groove. I can hear a pop song in there, with that little synth riff. Great start with the new Cubase – whatever's next?

Right on Cass, sounds good! Curious - are you using one of the soft synths in Cubase for the main synth part on this? I'm still on Cubase 5, but I did recently get the Padshop upgrade that I think you get free with your version of Cubase.

BTW, I was thinking same thing as Nick - this could work as the bed of an indie pop type song with a little tweaking, if you wanted to go that route. Sounds cool as is though.

Nick, Bob,
Thank You for checking it out!!! :D
I'll make sure not to chuck it...

Bob... the synth I used for that is the Halion SE that came with the Cube'7
In my old LE I was limited in many ways. I liked to use "Karnage" and "P8" synths a lot. If I wanted to use two of Karnage's synth sounds I would have to load Karnage into 2 of my midi VST slots of which there were limits to how many VST's I could load. It would call one "Karnage" and the other "Karnage(2)"
I took a look at the HalionSE and saw that I can load it once and designate many of it's sounds to different midi tracks without having to load another copy of it into the project. So in this test I designated 3 midi tracks to use three of Halion's synth sounds and panned them around to see how it worked. That's when I stumbled on that synth line that absolutely IS NOT COLDPLAY! :D

I just started an intensive work schedule that will only allow a day or two over the next month for any more expiriments...

Next up, figure out how to side-chain and duck sounds...
