Funky with Horns - Overdone?

Post by JonathanEarthenMusic » Wed Jul 24, 2024 5:06 pm

Hey all,

So I had forwarded this track to a music library, and he said it was a good track, but that the samples I used seemed too close/common with other tracks that had been overdone in the past while, and that the genre had run it's course for a while...

Just wondering if there's anyone out there who could confirm if these samples sound too much like other funk tracks that have gotten placements in film or tv... I did chop up the samples a lot, but I'm wondering if maybe I didn't chop them up enough. I realize that this is kind of a hard ask, but I thought I would check.

Thanks a lot,
-Jonathan

Hey Jonathan,

I think he's right. I couldn't quite place it, but I thought that I had heard that piece before. It's probably that I've heard some of those horn samples before.

But yeah, that type of Funk style is a bit long on the tooth. The Silk Sonic, Bruno Mars, type sound is one version of Funk that is more recently in vogue.

All the best,

Hey thanks a lot Mark. So I suppose it would be a more specialty request now and not so much in the current wave of what people need probably, hey?

I would say so... In my experience when I've had tunes like this (ones in which I'm waiting on that special opportunity to come calling so I can blow their minds with just the right piece of music!!), it usually never shows up..

Better to just keep writing and pitching. Learn from this one, and take what you learn and put it into future tunes.

Hi Jonathan

Did you try use Shazam in your track or in the original sample?
Did you use only the brass samples or the whole instrumental?

I haven't shazamed it yet, but that's a great idea. I have definitely tried to chop them up a lot to make them my own, but maybe I didn't do it enough...
