Geo's back, hopefully out of the 80's
Hi guys, rough (3rd) mix of a song for Christian Pop/Rock songs submission. It's another song I wrote almost 20 years ago so I used it as an exercise in trying to update my sound (Foo Fighters "Pretender" was my sonic reference). The song is:No Change (It shall be the same)www.taxi.com/geoThanks, and of course, I have a really good feeling about this song . (see a trend?) GeoNo Change (It shall be the same)Lyrics and music by George DanielsCopyright 2007Verse 1:I watched one man, in the rapture of his dreams,Disconnected from reality he doesn’t know what he believes.Well I’ve seen through his eyes, through the chemical haze,And I’ve felt the pain of longing as I chased that endless wave. Chorus:Cause it shall be the same, different, yet the same. One love can take us through this pain and it shall be the same,No change.Verse 2:I watched one man, in the shambles of his life,Separated from ones he loves he doesn’t care what’s wrong or rightWell I’ve seen through his eyes, felt the rage and the pain,But I only ever raised my hand one time and swore I’ll never do it again.ChorusBreak:No change...I only ever raised my hand one time (x3)And I swore, I’ll never ever do it again.Verse 3:I watched one man, saw him in the corner of my eye,Contorted in his hatred, he hides the child inside.Well I’ve never walked his path and yes sometimes I should be scared,But when you take a long walk with the King at your side, you never ever have a reason to fear.No fear. No, nothing to fear.Chorus

Me again, does any one hear a weird sound on the verses? I think I hear something, I've checked tracks, maybe it's a between track effect? Or ahve I just had my ears in the cans too long? Geo

You can take the boy from the 80's but you can't take the 80's from the boy. But hey, Bro. I suffer the same. But you know what? The 80's has been long enough to where some of the sounds are coming back. Yes, this sounds like a song that would be sung at church with the whole congregation standing and clapping singing along. So it fits that bill well.

Hey Geo,The vocals are much better in the center.I think what you might be hearing on the verses is the echo on the guitar in the right channel. I would advise against having that long of an echo on your rhythm guitar, particularly at this tempo. The echo is creating another guitar part and it's muddying up the mix. Try putting a short slapback echo on there instead and it'll clean up the track and leave more space for the vocals. I'm not totally up on modern guitar sounds but I think things are dryer effects wise now than they were in the 80s, although, as johnhampt said, some of the 80s sounds are coming back. The vocals sound a bit muddy to me but it could be the guitar echo is what's making that happen. Try changing the guitar echo first and if that doesn't do it, take out a bit of the low mids on the vocals and maybe put a touch of high end "air" (around 10K) on them as well. Be gentle when applying EQ! EQ 101: Cut for correction, boost for effect.Have fun,Mazz

imagine if John Williams and Trent Reznor met at Bernard Hermann's for lunch and Brian Eno was the head chef!

Thanks guys, we plan on redoing the vocals, trying to get a more consistent level. Unfortunately I'm stuck with canned guitars but will approach the problem with EQ first (thanks Mazz) and a lighter touch second. I am working on a second song for this sub and will post that and a new mix of this in a couple of days. Thanks again.. Geo
