Georgie has a Choir in her music studio... but...
Hi guys,
Sorry I haven't been on the forum much lately. Just been working working working....
I invested in Symphonic Choirs and I've spent seven hours getting it installed correctly... I always struggle with these things. But I can't find Word Builder.
It doesn't seem to actually tell you where you open it from within your DAW. Is it supposed to be a Midi Insert? Cos it aint there. There was no option to install it onto the same drive as all my other EW software and DAW, so it's been put in with the Program Files on my C drive. I can open it as a stand-alone but my DAW can't "see" it. Can anyone sort me out?
I'm on 64bitPC using Vista and I'm on Cubase 5
Thanks in advance for any ideas!
Georgie

I would start by going straight to the source:
https://www.soundsonline.com/support/in ... &nav=0,1,7
It's a little tricky to get set up. You have to send MIDI out to it and then get MIDI back from it to the choirs. It doesn't run as a Plug-In as far as I can remember.

Thanks Mazz, I've had a look at their instructions and followed them but it seems my Wordbuilder isn't in the right place.
I'll have to go through the "request a ticket" process I think.
Thanks, and see you very soon...

In Sonar 8.5 I call up word builder as an effect. So I go into the effect box of the track where the choir is and then call up word builder. It works fine this way. Dunno if there is a clue there for you.

Georgie I'm still on Cubase 4 and on the NI version of choirs (not Play), but I simply instantiate Wordbuilder as a MIDI insert on the Midi track that's driving the corresponding channel on the Choir VI.
When you select a Midi track, the info pane on the left hand side of your screen (to the left of the track list) displays a number of items, one of them being MIDI Inserts. Clicking on that reveals a number of insert slots in which you can insert midi effects that came with Cubase as well as third party ones such as WB.
I cannot remember if I had to drag the WB into the corresponding Cubase folder manually for it to show up in the MIDI insert list, or if installation took care of that...

Seems like WB is different with different DAWs. I installed the Choir and didn't have WB at all. Couldn't find it. Turns out there is an update for Choir on the soundsonline website that enables WB. Easy fix for the install but doen't help with the setup. In Logic the connections have to be made in the virtual environment which didn't work for the longest time until I finally made myself figure it out. Actually works best with the CAPS LOCK Keyboard. Hey, don't feel bad about not getting it to work easily. I'm an old computer pro and it took me awhile... I haven't really spent too much time with it because I haven't had a REAL use for it yet. I'm sure that coming. Now I have to figure out the Multis and I seem to have a lack of consonants...

Re: Georgie has a Choir in her music studio... but...
It is my understanding that it is a stand alone operation, therefore you will have to open it separate. you will open your daw also, but with symphonic choir.
1) open wordbuilder (if necessary look at your installed programs list to find it, or see contents of each drive)
2) open daw (cubase)
3) open symphonic choir within your daw (cubase)
Go to wordbuilder and configure your midi.
1) midi in= keyboard
2)midi out= to midi in for symphonic choir. (probably called wordbuilder something or other that you will see in cubase when you are looking for the midi in, in the inspector panel for the symphonic choir plugin.)
I think your trouble is that you are trying to open wordbuilder within cubase. Instead you should open it separately. Then you just need to setup the midi inside wordbuilder, and setup the midi in for symphonic choir in the inspector panel in cubase. As long as they are on the same midi channel it should work. Out of wordbuilder, into symphonic choir.

Re: Georgie has a Choir in her music studio... but...
Thanks for your help guys.
Ok, I've tried everything you've suggested. Here's what I got:
I opened WB & SC as stand-alones. I opened a "new voice" in WB and tried to set the midi IN to my keyboard, but it wasn't there, only my sound card IN or Virtual IN and both of those choices produce an error. No other choices. In the midi out selection I have Microsoft GS Wavetable synth, my sound card Out and my sound card virtual out, all produce errors. No Symphonic Choirs or Word Builder appear as choices there.
I wasn't able to play the choir from my midi keyboard in the stand-alone, but if I clicked on the screen keyboard it played and I heard it.
When I open the choir in Cubase I can play from my midi keyboard fine.
Matt I've added a midi channel and looked in the inspector for a midi insert that's WB but it doesn't appear there. I've tried copying the VST .dll into the Steinberg folder like I do for VIs but that didn't work. It's probably nothing to do with the .dll in this case.
Keith, thanks for your ideas, and for making me feel less foolish for not being able to figure it out !!!!!
I'm sure I read in the manual that in Cubase you don't have to set the IN/OUT but it's supposed to show up in a midi track as an insert, as you say, Matt.
Len I'm going to investigate your thoughts a bit more....
This stuff always puts me off buying any more software, but once you get it working it's so fantastic you forget all the agony of getting it installed. It's a bit like childbirth.
Thanks again,
Georgie

FWIW I believe there is a Cubase Tutorial Video on Disc 1 of Symphonic Choirs. Under the directory <tutorials>. You should probably watch this. I had to watch mine a couple of times so I copied it to my drive. Also, I'll have to go through this procedure every project I want to use SC/WB in. I've done it so much I could do it in my sleep now... Geezzz the things we learn...
Good Luck!
