Great Key Changes

Post by Casey H » Tue Sep 26, 2006 12:52 am

I had mentioned on the Sgt. Pepper thread how much I like the key change to and from the bridge on "Something". So, this is a thread about great key changes.Check old the old Searcher's song "Needles and Pins", also done by the Ramones. If you are a guitar (or keyboard) player, play along and notice the key of the last verse, facilitated by the the bridge. I love stuff like that!Springsteen has a cool one in "Hungry Heart". The song is in C, goes to Eb for a while (I think it's the instrumental, gotta listen again) and back to C.The Who's "Getting in Tune" modulates up one step for a verse and comes back down to the original key later. Springsteen also does that on "Backstreets".Extra points: What Casey song is in Em but comes out of the bridge with the last verse in F#m? Where did Casey hide the key change? What else you got, musical-weenies (like me ) ? Casey

O.K. I'll Bite!Something that sticks out as a great chord (key) change (after Lennon's in the other thread ), is the haunting "No Time To Live" by Blind Faith. I'm not sure if it was Winwood or Clapton who wrote this song, but the first two chords are amazing. On the guitar, the first chord is a barred F major with the top 3 strings open. The second chord is an E minor. It's not really a "key change," but it IS effective!Erm

I've always liked the key changes in the Kansas tune, "Song For America". There are a handfull of them in there. They are slick indeed.I just bought two tickets to see Kansas. About fifteen feet from the stage... Can't wait!

The change in Al Stewart's "Year Of The Cat". It changes the whole mood of the song just for that bridge--course, it's a bitch to play on the guitar, for me, anyway! BTW, if ya really want to screw with a mediocre guitar player, ask him to play at your wedding, then request a Billy Joel (or some other piano player) tune. Hook, I saw Kansas some years ago when they toured with REO at what was then Riverport Amp. in St. Louis--great show, even if we were way up on the lawn!

We Can Work it Out: Genius or fools? On this one it it quite obvious that 2 songs were strung together to make one-- Paul's verses and John's "Life is Very Short" bridge... If I submitted this to TAXI today, what would they say regarding that bridge and whether it comes across as natural for this song?I love it BTW, esp. the triple time measures thrown in a few times for transition. Masteful key changes separate the men from the boys and the women from the gals. Paul Simon was a master.I am a big fan of concealed key changes. If I ever get a site up I will post one that has exactly the same chords for its bridge and is yet in a different key from the verses!!!
