billg, I don't think of those Dylan lyrics as vague at all. I think of it as very specific imagery, delivered for an intended effect. As to what that intended effect is, I haven't the vaguest idea...

And the funniest thing here, it that the 'Teen Spirit' being the title here, is a deodorant... From songfacts:''Kathleen Hanna, the lead singer of the group Bikini Kill, gave Cobain the idea for the title when she spray painted "Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit" on his bedroom wall after a night of drinking and spraying graffiti around the Seattle area. In his pre-Courtney Love days, Cobain went out with Bikini Kill lead singer Tobi Vail, but she dumped him. Vail wore Teen Spirit deodorant, and Hanna was implying that Cobain was marked with her scent. Cobain didn't know it when he wrote the song, but Teen Spirit is a brand of deodorant marketed to young girls. Kurt thought Hanna was complimenting him on his rebellious spirit. Sales of Teen Spirit deodorant shot up when this became a hit, even though it is never mentioned in the lyrics. ''Strangely enough I just read that article, and then saw this posting... - had to post, hehe! Here's the link to the whole story:http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=416 - until next timefrodoJun 16, 2008, 6:31pm, nomiyah wrote:I've been having fun reading this thread. I heard that a long time ago but forgot the story. The only explanation for these lyrics is drugs, lots of them. It's still a great song. I like that whole album.

billg, I think most of the lyrics on Astral Weeks were improvised on the spot, except for Madame George. Pretty impressive, if so.
