Greetings and a Canadian Question

Post by gman22 » Thu Feb 07, 2008 8:30 am

Hello all I joined Taxi back in sept/07, I had a chance to go to the Rally and was very impressed with everything. For the past couple of months I have been working on instrumental tunes to submit to the instrumental listings... My question is this, being a Canadian, should I be a member of a Performing rights organization such as SOCAN before I submit my songs to Taxi? Even though they do not contain lyrics? If anyone can help me out with this, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the time.gman22

Thanks for the time.gman22You don't have to be a member of SOCAN to submit, but you will need to be a member in order to make deals - publishers & music libraries will want to know your CAE/IPI number. It doesn't cost anything to join, and you can apply on line. You just need to show that one of your songs/instrumentals has been played. "Even though they do not contain lyrics?"I don't understand this part of your question. The point of being a member of a PRO is to have someone collect the royalties owing to you for use of your music. Whether it is sung, or played by an instrument makes no difference.HTHcheersHummin'bird PS - how did I miss you at the Rally? Hope to meet you this year!

Thank you hummingbird for the reply...I used to be a member of socan so I will look into re-joining. I wanted to ask you another questions I had found a posting you had made about copywriting songs...you had mentioned a price of $35 I think it was to have 3 songs copied? I would like to copywrite my songs before I submit then to taxi... Is this correct and if so what website is this? Thanks you for the time agian..GmanP.s. Looking forward to next year's Rally

Looking forward to next year's RallyYou can copyright your songs as a collection (as much as you can get on a CD) with the US Library. Cost is $45 for one song or a collection of songs. You can download the PA form or SR form from http://www.copyright.gov/register/performing.htmlThey are beta testing on-line copyrighting, when that's set up it will be $35 for the first song & $1 each for the additional, if you are registering a collection. You don't need the certificate from them before you submit - they datestamp everything and your certificate will be dated that date, and it will likely take about 6 months to get it.You should note they do not accept Canadian personal cheques or postal orders, only a bank draft in US funds made out to them.Stay in touch so we can meet at the Rally, eh?cheersH'bird
