Has anyone tried Kontakt 3?
Hello everybody, I was wondering if any of you is currently using the Kontakt 3 player. Like it? Not? Pros and cons? Has anyone imported the EWQL Gold collection into it? Does it work better/worse/the same as with the embedded player that came with it?I'm looking into upgrading to a intel-based mac and I'm wondering if it would be worth it to go with the Kontakt 3 upgrade as well. NI just came up with an offer to crossgrade to it from any of the embedded players (from EWQL for example) for $279. I know EWQL will not work with intel-based macs so I would need to upgrade to something else to keep using that. Has anyone tried the Play engine for EWQL on an intel mac? Sorry lots of questions. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!Antonio

I haven't upgraded to 3 yet. I always hang back a bit, as these things tend to be a bit unstable at first. This seems to be no different judging from the word on the street . My advice would be to get Kontakt 2 for now (you should still be able to buy that at many stores) and wait a bit on the upgrade.Gold works great in K2, and it is MacIntel compatible.matto

Thanks matto. I was considering buying Kontakt 2 but since I got the crossgrade offer today I started to consider 3 as well. You're probably right, though, better wait a little until the initial bugs are gone. Thanks!Antonio

Re: Has anyone tried Kontakt 3?
Glad to see this thread up as I was wondering the same after getting my crossgrade offer today. For the same "intel mac vs EW Silver" issue, would I need to buy the full blown version of Kontakt 2 ,or would I only need to buy the Kontakt to Kontakt 2 upgrade to get EW to work?here is a link to the product I am wondering about - http://www.musician.com/document?doc_id ... 709161Also, Matto, can you recommend a good easy to digest guide on orchestration? You can pm if you want so I don't disturb this thread.

Re: Has anyone tried Kontakt 3?
Anne, you can't get the update as that's only for people who have Kontakt 1, not Kompakt (which is what comes/used to come with the EW stuff). You would need to find a crossgrade for K2, possibly some dealers still have stock left.Or perhaps you can find Kontakt 2 at a blowout price which could be similar in price to the K3 crossgrade offer. Better hurry up though, I'm sure dealers will be out of stock soon and after that it's K3 only. Which may work just fine on your setup, as I said I have no firsthand experience with it.I can't help you with the orchestration book, I never studied orchestration, I just do it by ear (not that I'm proud of that fact). You could try this, it's free:http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/for ... p?f=77Been thinking about checking it out myself, maybe I'll get a chance one of these days.Or ask mazz, he knows this type of stuff.

Re: Has anyone tried Kontakt 3?
Hi Anne,Woodwind and Brasswind (wwbw.com) has Kontakt 2 on clearance for $299. Not that cheap but cheaper than Kontakt 3.The forums for most orchestral libraries are full of tutorials on orchestration (some good, others not so much). The Garritan PO tutorials (garritan.com) have some good overviews that apply to orchestration in general, not just using their products.HTH,Antonio

It's a valuable read in terms of the way instruments are classified by sound & also how they are paired with each other. I think it's a good start to understanding the orchestra & how music is written for it.Let me know if Mazz has further references.

Quote:Also, Matto, can you recommend a good easy to digest guide on orchestration? Here's a nice one:The Guide to MIDI Orchestration, 3rd Edition by Paul Gilreath http://www.paulgilreath.com/But I don't think it's easy... Some theory of harmony knowledge is always a good idea in order to write interesting stuff.
