Heart Like Memphis

Post by jchitty » Tue Mar 10, 2009 9:47 am

I really don't think this song would make it past the TAXI screeners (not complaining, just an observation about the state of country music today)....it doesn't make much sense in parts as far as laying out a SPECIFIC story, but oddly enough, it works. This may be a harbinger of things to come in country music....maybe songs don't have to be so literal anymore. I like this song....the chorus is very catchy. Yeah, I know it's two cute guys (for the teens) but I still like the song. It's become a big hit in my neck of the woods.I owe folks some posts, PMs and e-mails...I will answer ASAP. BTW, this You Tube isn't the best quality...sorry for that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zzrFoPk ... 1&index=24

Janet, The same thing went through my head when I heard this song!! I was like isn't this the opposite of what we are told to write? I like the melody of the song. I'm not going to lie...when you've got two teenage boys singing together it kind of makes me naseous. But clearly I am not their market. Glad you brought this up.Andy

Chits,Thanks! I like the song. It's good. It's a good lyric, imo. there is a story there, just told a bit differently than standard Nashville style. Here is a better recording:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvD1DoF1 ... re=related Dean

Chits,I liked it too.....but it sounds more crossover with a "Jonas Brothers" type feel......that is what the younger audience seems to be buying and listening to....Regards,Dick

Hey Chits,I think the record companies are trying to get crossover appeal so they can sell more singles. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I think Country music continues to move more towards pop music all the time and has been for years. There is always the occasional George Strait record to keep it Country, but I think that is the course - like it or not.Of course I kinda like Taylor Swift even if she is much more pop star than Country and she writes very catchy and well crafted songs. Love Story is an undeniable hit that you just can't seem to shake.Best,Cisko

I agree. "Love Story" is impressive...kind of makes me sick that she wrote that...apparently by herself?Andy

. . .and taylor can't sing very well either....but success is not a 4 letter wordnow on THIS tune by the boys, i actually like it!! it's not country, but very good crossover--i told some forum this, and it's not a new idea (duh), but the future of pop and country is BOTH...and i'm old. it's right there staring us in the face. i won't go into the reasons, as it will only piss everybody off--and me too....!it's generalist for sure, but it is well structured, maybe too much so...but again, it works in many of the venues of today, IMHO.the best,wh
