Help! I've fallen and I can't....

Post by georginasaint » Mon Nov 17, 2008 9:44 am

Hi guys, really basic problem which some of you might be able to enlighten me on. I bought a new C3 Condenser Mic at the Rally. I've finally got the correct cable and got it working. I'm recording onto Cubase 4 and it works - I can see the audio event and while I am recording I can hear my own voice. But when I play back... nothing. Is it the set-up of channels or bus???? Any idea? I'm so green when it comes to doing this with a computer, I'm just at a loss. I'm plugging my mic into an Audio Kontrol 1 sound card, in case that's relevant. I can hear any midi instruments just fine. Thanks for your thoughts, Georgie

Thanks for your thoughts, GeorgieHey Georgie,I don't know if this will help since I don't use Cubase, but in ProTools there is an output selection tab that you click on to choose which signal path you want each track to go to. For instance, if you want the track to go to your monitors, you choose "Analog 1&2" to listen back to the track, if it's a stereo track etc.Ironically, I was going to start a thread with the same title: I got up the other night to get a glass of water, tripped on the bottom three stairs and bruised my ribs! Unfortunately, my wife was out of town, and I lay writhing in pain for 15 minutes. I had fallen and couldn't get up! --- So I'm sure someone will "heal your pain" amongst Cubase users!Ouch,Ern

Hi Ern, did we meet at the Rally - you were there right? I met so many people and I'm hopeless with names/faces and I think we might have met for a minute. Anyway, thanks for your thoughts - I think you are right, but on Cubase it's slightly different and i just don't know how to set it or what to set it to. I'm browsing through the manual but it's like reading Chinese for me. Well, I'll see if a Cubase user can guide me more quickly than messing about and guessing and meanwhile I'll continue writing a song.... thanks for your time!Georgie

There might be a knob on your MIDI device for playback versus hearing what you are recording, check for that.

It sure was fun ----Hope someone can help you!Ern

Georgina,When you record, you usually have the little "monitor" icon pressed. But when you play it back, it needs to be UN-pressed, or you won't have any output sound from that track.Hope it's that easy!-Mark

In the menu in cubase go to devices- vst connections- output thats where you see the busses. Tuse output Up to left on the monitor, third button has to be marked, blue ( show inspector) then you´ll see the track and will be able to tuse output. You also have a little speaker symbol wich has to be unmarked when you listen to your recordings. I hope it helped you.

Hey guys - THANK YOU!Mark - you are the winner!!!! Linpop you are runner up because you mentioned this too... IT WORKED!!! Who'd have thunk it would be so simple - switching the little monitor speaker icon did the trick - I'm so excited! I knew it would be quicker and easier to ask on this forum rather than phone a "helpline" or read a 300 page manual! Thanks again! Hope I can return the favor one day...Georgie

I won! I won! Hey Georgina...manuals and books are a little too overwhelming for some of us who want to get right to it. But after you get a little more comfortable with Cubase, you really should pick it up or find a book about Cubase at the library...because it's much more interesting to read once you understand what the hell they're talking about. When you don't know anything yet, it's too boring and impenetrable...but soon it will all make a LOT of sense and save you a lot of headaches and time. Really an amazing program.Good luck!-Mark
