Help with critique question

Post by mulberrycoach » Thu May 20, 2010 1:36 pm

Hi all – We just got a helpful custom critique on a new song demo. We do have one question that we’d like some feedback on from Taxi members. The screener noted (correctly) that the song is rooted in a ‘70s pop feel, and suggested we check out more contemporary artists. Actually, that’s what we did, and modeled this song after a Camera Obscura track we really liked (“Hey Lloyd…”).

So my question is, does this song sound to you like Camera Obscura? To my ears, they have a very retro sound that is nonetheless of considerable contemporary appeal. That’s the niche we’d like to be in.

If this DOESN’T seem to capture the Camera Obscura vibe, we would greatly appreciate hearing why not. There may be something subtle (or obvious!) we’re missing.

Also, it’s only a demo, so pardon the rough production edges and fake strings.

You can hear the song at http://www.songramp.com/mod/mps/viewtra ... ckid=79041.

Many thanks,

J with Mulberry Coach

I listened to both songs. I thought they were similiar in vibe, your singer was the superior vocal and Karen Carpenterish. Camera obscura had more of a driving bass, giving it a little more of a dance feel and less focus on the vocals. They also seemed a little sparser in most areas as far as instrumentation. I couldn't hear much bass in your song.
