They range from a U87 (original) to a TLM 103 (sounds as good for most things), to AKG's, Shures, and Sennhueser shotgun mics. I recently picked up the Rode K2(and got and M-3 for free), so there are a ton of choices. It's interesting that Flood mentioned Sennheiser shotgun mics. My K2-U is my favorite microphone --- read my story and weep! Years ago, I went to a garage sale. An old lady came out, and we got talking about all the electronic gear for sale in her garage. Her husband had passed away a few years ago, and was a T.V. and movie soundman. As we rummaged through the garage, I came across a matched pair of Sennheiser K2-U shotgun mics. I about soiled my shorts! I barely could ask her how much she wanted for those mics. She shrugged and said, "How about $5 apiece?"My buddy, who was the drummer in my band, just about had to catch me from passing out!Of course, we bought one each as well as other mics and a whole box of transformers, batteries, adapters etc., waltzing out of there after paying the poor lady about $30 total.Even though the K2-U is a small diaphragm condenser, on my voice it sounds HUGE! Also, it's a great drum overhead and acoustic guitar mic. And yesterday, I miked up an old Fender Deluxe Reverb amp with a Shure 57 on the speaker and the K2-U on the back of the amp through a phase-reversal adapter. What a big sound! That's my story, an' I'm stickin' to it! Ern P.S. I've told this story before, and a few people got mad at me for "taking advantage" of the old lady. But, hey, that's how garage sales work --- ya once in awhile find a great deal!
