To Hummingbird:Yes, this is my first time in a forum, and I am not computer literate. I'm not sure how to get into discussions, unless it's just a matter of replying like this.By the way, I went to your web site and listened to some of your music....it's beautiful!Miscue

If you want to start a new discussion, you go into the section of the forum where you want to post (Introductions), and on the right side, in the yellow banner, you should see "new thread" - click on that and you can start your own. Thanks for the listen! Do you have anything on line?Hummin'bird

Hi Hummin'bird:No, I don't have anything on line...I'm what one calls a "rank amateur". Eventually, I'll learn a lot of tricks of the trade. I'm a singer/songwriter and have joined TAXI. I sent my songs in for a custom critique and was thrilled with the response. Every suggestion the screeners gave made absolute sense to me, so now I'm working on making changes to some of my songs before I venture into writing more. I realize I won't be using TAXI's services for a while, since it appears they deal with only real professionals in the field. But, since they gave me some decent scores on the critiques, I see I at least stand a chance in the music world, and am excited about the challenge of bettering my work. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?Miscue

DEMO MAKERS

Post by miscue » Wed Sep 05, 2007 7:13 am

I have a question for the more seasoned musicians....I found a demo maker on line and sent him my music for arrangement and a female vocalist. The music was fine, but the vocalist was just okay...I could have sung it better. The trouble with sending out for a demo is I have no control of the finished product...I just pay for what is sent to me.Now...if my song gets interest from a publisher, recording company, or whoever...does the demo maker and the vocalist get any kind of royalties, or am I sole owner of my song, since I did pay for the finished product?I look forward to any advice out there.Miscue

If they agreed to a work for hire, then you own it outright. If you gave the arranger credit as such, then royalties should've been worked out up front. If the singer was given performance credit outside of work for hire as an artist, then you're in another sticky situation there. If you can lend more insight to what your agreement was, then we might be able to provide more info. Kellyps welcome aboard

Thanks for the feedback, Kelly. There were no contracts of any kind signed between me and the demo maker or the singer. I just paid him outright to do the arrangement for me and asked that he have a female vocalist sing it...in which I paid her, also. So, I guess I own total rights to my song, no?Miscue
