"HIPSTER" INDIE-ROCK INSTRUMENTAL ?

Post by Anders » Wed Mar 06, 2019 3:01 am

Hi,

Does this fit the listing? ...and how is the mix?

Grateful for your comments :)

My track:
https://soundcloud.com/akysound/whatajourney/s-Vfvas

The Listing:
"HIPSTER" INDIE-ROCK INSTRUMENTALS are needed by a globally successful Music Library with a great track record of placements in Films, TV shows, and Commercials.
They’re looking for Mid-to-Up Tempo Instrumentals that would fall in the general range of the following references:
“Heat of the Summer” by Young the Giant
“Little Dark Age” by MGMT
Although the references have vocals, this request is for Instrumentals only!
Please send them well-crafted Instrumentals in the general vibe and style of the references above. Think of the modern, current types of music that would be played where the college kids (and hipsters) like to gather for drinks and a good time. That’s what they’re looking for! Submissions should be around two to four minutes long (give or take) with non-faded endings. Do NOT copy the referenced music in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a guide for texture, tone, and vibe. Broadcast Quality is needed.

Thanks!
/Anders

HI Anders,

This is a nice track...but it does not have the hipster feel.

It also sounds like a song with the vocals removed....not an instrumental.

A/B your track against the examples...... your track need to fit right in.
Listen to their bass and drum sounds..... and the reverb!
(I know the examples are not similar to each other)

My 4 cents worth,
Tim

Hey Anders!

A small rule of thumb I use in regards to drums that may be helpful to ya... If they are meant to sound like fake drums, quantize. If they are meant to sound like acoustic drums, humanize. In other words, keep fake drums strictly on the beat and acoustic sampled drums very slightly off the grid at random to make them sound more real.

The bass definitely needs some attention imo. The weird thing about the listing and the reference tracks are that "hipster" is such a vague term, and the two listed tracks reflect that. If the references came from the person wanting the track however, you can't go wrong by choosing one and modeling the sound after it.

Hope that helps some!

Andrew

Thank you Tim and Andrew!

I think the root of the problem here is that this is an older track that I started writing for another ”indie” -listing with different references/specs

A/B your track against the examples...... your track need to fit right in.
Listen to their bass and drum sounds..... and the reverb!
-Yep, you’re right!

If the references came from the person wanting the track however, you can't go wrong by choosing one and modeling the sound after it.
-Very true

Not happy with the mix right now but I think the track has some indiepotential, I will try to shape it into something more hipster :)

Thanks!
