Home-made KIK

Post by k o star » Sat Sep 05, 2009 3:17 am

Here's a pic diagram of the whole setup... Drummers, did I miss out anything??The Roland E16 is midi-ed out to the Axiom 25 above it & the Axiom is usb-ed to the Macbook...Axiom 25 controls the snares, hi-hats, rides, toms & crashes on Addictive Drmz in Logic which is rewired to Reason whereby the Roland E16 triggers the Kicks thru bus 4 on the NNXT sampler...One more thing I might do later is tie another string to either play double kicks or activate open/close hi-hats...-KelHome-made KIK vid:

Previously:Exp Pedal = KIKI'm tryna use my expression pedal connected to my Axiom 25 keyboard/controller to trigger my kick which is note C1...not sure if this is possible... not much success so far...Anyone knows if this is possible & how??Kel

Probably not. It's just not intended to work that way, though you could open and close a hihat with the expression pedal, depending on your hardware/software. What you need is a kick trigger and a drum brain. There are a few pads kits that let you hook up a sustain (momentary switch) pedal to trigger a kick drum sound, but that doesn't allow you control over accents/volume.The least expensive one looks like this:http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ControlPad/It has a couple of inputs for external pads/triggers, so far as I know, this and a kick trigger is the cheapest way to get where you're going.

Thanks Mojobone... ...the Axiom has trigger pads on it & can trigger the kick but I'm wanting to use the sus or exp pedal to practice drumming like a "real drum" simulating the kik pedal & all... just to revise what I've learnt before...I just managed to release audio sound by the sus pedal by controlling a bass noise vol... but still not close to a kick sound... hmmm... abt to give up soon...-Kel

KelWithout being a Midi Jedi Master and getting way deep into the workings of your Axiom, I don't see this happening. I don't think it will happen easily even if you are very good at midi because your pedal is a controller and doesn't create events, which are what trigger your sounds. I other words, you'll need to figure out ( on your machine ) how to make your controller ( pedal )create an event which then triggers your drum sound. I think it can be done. You'd have to insert a Sysex code in there somewhere that changes the pedal instruction. I do a lot of midi and I've programmed some pretty weird stuff like controlling a live light show from my keyboard but I know nothing of your machine. I think you'd just have an easier time working with a sequencer. If the pedal thing is really important to you, you might consider purchasing a real drum pedal with a midi trigger on it. You could then record your pedal events.Good Luck!Keith

An expression pedal is a continuous controller, which is more like sliding a finger up and down a violin string. A bass drum pedal is more like a key on a velocity sensitive keyboard. If you were going to use regular keyboard pedals to do this, you'd need two: one programmed to send out the note, and the other to vary the velocity. Sounds a bit clunky to me given the alternative: program it from a velocity sensitive keyboard, or do what the others are suggesting and get a pedal and trigger interface that emulates the real thing.Since you already have a keyboard, why not use that? With DAW and MID technology, you can program a drum track a few parts at a time.Mazz

Seems like you want to capture your "foot vibes". Which tells me you really want something that act's like a drum. I wanted the same thing. I bought the cheapest midi drum kit I could find, DTXplorer. Bought it for the controller pad and the stand only. The module sounds like a toy, but it was the cheapest rig like this that had midi out. So that goes into either EZdrummer or Superior Drummer.Grab your sticks, crank up the computer speakers and drum till you pass out. It's a beautiful setup.B

Thank U Keith, Mazz & Bryan... Appreciate all Ur info...I'll probably not invest in anything to get that kick cos the only reason I wanted to trigger that is to practice drumming "like" a real drum setup... My Axiom 25 is pretty much setup like a drumkit... with hi hats on the left snare below & the pads on my right hand corner for all the toms... only thing missing are the pedals... hmmm, luckily there is Addictive Drmz for composing yea!!I just wanna keep my drumming skills sharp but I'l make do with an imaginary kik for my right foot for now ^_^Semi-air drumming Anyone??Kel

The Alesis kit referenced above is on my wish list for precisely the reasons you mentioned, Kel. That and a pair of Yamaha sustain pedals can sub for a full kit. (and you can use hands or sticks) A drummer friend has done this for small coffeehouse gigs for years. (he tapes the sustain pedals to the floor with Ductape) O'course, a few years in, he upgraded to a TrapKat and a DM5, so jes' like buying a studio, it's a slippery slope, heh.

Cool one Mojobone... full kit is what we want yea!!ROTFL!! Matto, that is too funny!!!However, the thing U mentioned is definitely do-able right now... cos I already have another keyboard hooked to my axiom... it's not a very cheap one though =))Maybe I could tie a string to the C1 note & the other end to my foot... heh! U know what, I really think that's possible...Cool! I'l try it when I'm off tmr... Will keep U all updated ^_^Thanks ALL!-Kel
