Home Studio: Recording fully-orchestraed demos

Post by amayzlin » Thu Apr 03, 2014 12:09 pm

Hello everyone

I have a home studio but very limited knowledge about sound engineering and practically no music education. Everything I do, I do by ear. I know that some of the music genres require fully-orchestrated demos, but we all know how much these can run if done at a professional studio. I'd love to record the demos myself, but I am scared to write full arrangements because no matter how truthful the phrase "There's no right or wrong in art" is, there are strict rules for creating good arrangements that I don't know about: sonic spectrum, specific instrument frequencies, what instruments to use and how to use them properly, how chords work or don't work together - stuff like that. Nevertheless, I gave one of my songs a shot and here's what came out. I honestly don't know what to think. Is this sufficient for a fully-orchestrated demo or is this completely unacceptable? Perhaps you can shed some light, I would really appreciate that. Thanks in advance.

Alex,

Wanted to check it out but your link just takes me to a Yahoo search page and not the actual song.
Edit your post and check the link to make sure it works.

:D
If I log off, I may never be able to get back on ;)

Wow, that song sounds well produced. "Demo" is a serious understatement, so don't cut yourself short. After all music is not rocket science, if it sounds good it IS good. At Taxi just pay attention to the listings (the road), then the screeners (the police) will let you by. If the road doesn't require a limousine, you won't benefit from showing up in one ;)

I don't even have a Taxi account yet. Not sure if I should get it. :D Thank you very much for the advice, that's great stuff.

Hey Alex, I really enjoyed this song! From the text of your initial post, I totally wasn't expecting this! Keep doing your thang, it's pretty obvious that you're moving in the right direction. Let your ear be your guide, sign up for online classes when you have some spare time, and you'll find that every production will be better than the previous. But from where you are right now, you're ready to jump in the ring and play with the rest of us here at Taxi. Do you have any more songs?

~~Matt
