Ever since I was a young man
I have called this place my home
From the desert to the foothills
I have made its warmth my own

Though there’s trouble in our nation
Lord, it’s never been this near
Now a shadow has been cast, when I heard the news I asked
How could this have happened here

Now it’s with our friends and fam’ly
Somehow slowly we’ll get through
But the looks on haunted faces

Cos a land of peaceful neighbors
Suddenly has filled with fear
And my wife just shook her head, then she pulled me close and said
“How could this have happened here”

I’d hate to think a tragedy like this
Is what the cost of freedom sometimes is
But when the righteous and courageous fall
Then that’s when we need freedom most of all

And somehow the worst in people
Shows the faith that’s in the rest
So a crowd that’s keeping vigil
Knows their prayers will be blessed

Cos there’s candles on the sidewalk
Rose bouquets are stained with tears
I ask why but I suppose, only God in heaven knows
How could this have happened here
