You are not going to make a lot of money from Internet radio plays. Millions of plays only equals thousands of dollars. Don't waste time chasing baby money.
Hi Desire,

As you know I think you are a great guy and I appreciate your comments. But, I have to disagree with you on this one.

My first assumption was that an internet play would get the standard $0.09 mechanical license (but I have absolutely no idea). Based on your comment I am assuming I am wrong about that cause with over 600,000 plays at $0.09 the original poster is looking at +/- $54,000. (again, this may not be anywhere accurate of what reality is).

Let's say it is only $0.01 per internet play... that is still $6,000.

I may be loose in some areas of my finances (particularly music production) but considering I drive 2 miles out of my way to save $1/gallon on gas each fill up, I would most definitely chase down a few thousand dollars! In this case I would fight tooth and nail to get whatever is coming and roll that back into the studio. - I have never known any money to be bad. Especially passive residuals.
From what I heard the other night on Al Jazeera, I thought Desire could be very generous if not overly-exhuberant on his estimations. I happened to flip on the tv, and they were discussing the pandora-ASCAP suit settlement I believe. I don't know the details but they had one guy who had over a million plays and only received $16. I tried to find out what program it was, no luck, since their website has changed since they went live on cable. I thought perhaps it was "consider this" or "America tonight", maybe someone else will chime in who saw the whole piece.

This was David Lowery, from Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker. His original article is here:

http://thetrichordist.com/2013/06/24/my ... hirt-sale/

As he himself notes, that was only from one particular royalty stream, and for his share of the song. This article fills in some of the rest of the details:

http://theunderstatement.com/post/53867 ... 16-dollars

All that being said, Desire is pretty much on the (small amount of) money about the order of magnitude of potential internet royalties.

It's not quite as simple as a single rate due to different licenses for different types of webcaster, revenue % caps etc., but the basic internet performance royalty rate for 2013 is $0.0022 per performance. This rate x 600,000 = $1,320. This is before Soundexchange takes a cut for administrative expenses, and before anyone else who has a right to a percentage (label, manager, etc.).

don't know if it might help in your case...

but, a guy I once did some work for ignored my repeated invoices...for nearly 2 years. Finally, I sent an invoice over which I had written in large letters: "okay...that's it; I'm telling my Mom on you!!"

He made payment in full. No foolin'. ...

That sounds like it is still worth chasing but at the same time is rather disheartening for so many plays. When did music become a currency traded in pips? Dear God.

And I was feeling pity for another partial documentary I saw, where men would go to the top of a volcano, and load ~ 150 lbs of sulfur chips (pips? ), in a stick with 2 baskets, and go down the mountain, weigh them for ~$16 a day  And I bet the cost of living is a lot less in that country, not to mention that a basket would be much cheaper than a studio stocked with gear, and it's all downhill after you load up! :|

"Beethoven's concern over money reflects the fact that despite enjoying a reputation of one of Europe's finest composers he never managed to profit from his remarkable talent."

That was just the first composer that popped into my head that I googled for income, so maybe it was just chance that I might have picked the only one with low income?? :| Or maybe nothing has changed, and it isn't the composers, but others who have profited. I wonder how many Beethovens gave up and went into fast food because it paid better??

the pips I was referring to is the measurement of FOREX and currency futures. But it is basically the same thing as going to the top of a volcano (an active one) and hoping you don't get burned.

When we have to put 4 decimal places in our royalties payment... well, nuf said there.
