HOW do I make Cubase work with dual monitors?

Post by mikeymike2000 » Tue Dec 08, 2015 7:48 pm

So I have tried many things and I like to think I am really good at Google. But I only find a Steinberg thread that talks about this 6 ways from Sunday, even has pics but it does not actually answer the question asked.

I want to be able to have the MIDI editing window up top OR the mixer up top, I want to be able to move any element on the top or bottom of the screen at will. (My monitors are stacked vertical)

Most of the windows I open in Cubase will not move out of the confines of the main program window. Some will but the ones I want to, won't.

I am using V6.5 (I know I am gonna upgrade soon but I may just go with a different program altogether if I can't perform a basic function like this).

Thank you for your time!

Hey Mike!
I run Cubase and dual monitors side by side.
My monitors are setup as "dual screen" in Windows
I keep my main Cubase Window (the one that opens when I initiate Cubase) full view on one screen
Then any of the editing windows, when you open them, can be dragged to the second screen and will stay there until you move them somewhere else.
I use my 2nd screen for the Faders/Mixing Board and VST instruments
The only little bug I've found is that when I reopen Cubase, the mixing board might be a tiny bit bigger than the last session and I have to stretch it back a hair to where I like it. No biggie, just a little annoyance.

Hope This Helps!

Hey Cass!

Well, I can get the transport bar on either screen but that seems to be it. I am most interested in the MIDI editor on the second screen but that won't go up. I can't even get the mixer up there. Any window I open will not move outside the original program window within Cubase.

When I plug in the HDMI it just works on extended desktop mode (I don't have to change any settings in desktop or anything) and I can take all other programs and shift them around. Only Cubse has this problem. Pop out windows will not move past the main program window. - It also changes sizes of all the windows within the program window each time I click something. (I have just dealt with that for a while).

I am obviously doing something wrong. But what?

Mikey, I'm sitting with mine right now (8.5 pro)
My main window is NOT "Maximized" (the little button on the top right of the program)
But I have the window stretched to fill only ONE SCREEN, everything else can move anywhere.
Check That!!!???!!!

Thanks Len and Cass.

I appreciate your efforts!!

Perhaps it has something to do with the version I have. 6.5

I verified the work space(s) are not locked. I tried to not have the main window "maximized" but still, nothing will go out of the boundaries of the main program window.

The reason I was going to try all this out is to change the way in which I produce but I have spent too much time (and yours) trying to figure it out. I gotta keep moving forward with production. But this was supposed to stream line that process.

If it does not just work after the upgrade in a few weeks then I will just keep doing what I was doing before.

Unless anyone local wants to stop over and try to figure it out in exchange for food and beverage. . .

Fwiw, I did once in Cubase 5.1, for one thing, I didn't have matching monitors. I thought I could use it to view more of my project at once, which it did, but I kept losing the mouse, lol!

key commands and workspaces for example F3 to switch to the mixer screen and workspace to set the parameters like full screen, or command-E for open default editor, might be more efficient.

I use F2, F3, F11 a lot. F2 toggles the transport so I can make it disappear if it's in the way, F3 for mixer, F11 for the e to open the vst window of an instrument or effect.
