Hymn forwards
So, I stuck up some mics and did a couple quickie renditions of a few old hymns for that Dispatch listing a while back, and all three were forwarded. This was before we had the recently inherited 1948 Steinway tuned up, so it gave it the appropriate "old church piano" vibe. Rock of AgesNearer My GodShall We GatherNothing fancy... but I thought it fit the bill. It's been a long time since I've tried to record myself "without a net"... no click, no editing the MIDI data, no quantize. Fortunately I was still able to edit all my mistakes out. Heh heh.

Re: Hymn forwards
Man I love the sound of that piano!! Its Steinway-ness cuts through even though its out of tune. The high notes have that great ringing to them! Of course, the playing is very, very good and appropriate as well! You nailed this one, well deserved! Nice to see you back on the forum as well!!Take care,Mazz

imagine if John Williams and Trent Reznor met at Bernard Hermann's for lunch and Brian Eno was the head chef!

Re: Hymn forwards
Yeah, thanks Mazz... been a little crazy with "real" work lately. Which is always good. Yeah, it was an interesting thing... we bought a older ('73) Yamaha C3 a year ago, which was REALLY bright but had nice action and good low-end. And then got the call we were going to get the Steinway, and were a little torn. But, after having them side by side for a couple weeks before the Yamaha was shipped to it's new owner, we know we made a great choice. Not only because it's a family heirloom, but the Steinway will be WAY more versitile as a recording instrument, and it's mellower tone is much more suited to our small house (you really needed to wear earplugs to really go for it on the Yamaha). It needs some work on the action... old felts and whatnot (you can hear the clicking on the recording... but I sorta like how that adds "vibe"), but the case is in nice shape so no major refinish or rebuilding needed. It's fun to think that my boys will grow learning to play on a nice instrument. Here's the Steinway. My mic panel is behind the plant on the right... 4 lines plus phones to the studio. Handy dandy! Here's both piano squeezed in the "piano room". Funny how the Yamaha looks like it's overcompensating next to the classic and refined Steinway.

Oh, Stick......those were so beautiful! The Steinway was a perfect choice (the Yamaha looks like it's on steroids, btw, lol). I love your studio, beautiful and peaceful ambience going there.I got forwarded on Nearer but I sho wish I'd had you playing on it. I could easily hear your rendition on a Ken Burn's documentary of Titanic. Made my heart ache jes listenin' to it.

Thanks Christi and Squid... The piano is actually in my house. That room used to be dining room. But we knew we'd want a piano in there at some point, so when we remodeled the house we moved the dining area over to the other side of the kitchen. This is the studio, in what used to be the garage.

Now THAT'S a studio. Ask me how much I appreciate the wood floors in the iso-booth, too! (no more dusty carpets or awful dusty padding on the walls, ack!)May I ask what region of the US you live in? PLEASE tell me you live below the Mason Dixon. Please.

Re: Hymn forwards
Ha ha... no... we lived in Nashvegas for 3 years a while ago, and being that we're both "northerners" we didn't really fit into the culture. I live 30 minutes up the hill toward Lake Tahoe from Sacramento. They call it "the foothills". It's truly beautiful, and great place to raise the kiddos. And yes, the floors are wood, but the walls in the iso room are fabric covered insulation to keep the sound under control. But it's new and not dusty at all! Ha ha! Did you note the Murphy Bed in the wall? This is for my out-of-town clients... it's a really nice cozy get away for cutting vocals or mixing a record or whatever. And my wife is a good cook too! Come on out!
