Is Logic Pro X that much better than Garageband?

Post by tomyco » Sat May 16, 2020 8:15 am

I've been using Garageband for a several years now and been told by many that I should go to Logic Pro x. I use it basically to write and record my own songs, more of a hobby, certainly not a Pro at this. My question is:

1. I've been told that the layout is very similar, (I really hate the idea of learning a whole new software) Is the layout pretty close to garageband?

2. What are the biggest advantages to Logic Pro X?

3. I've been told that there are a lot more virtual instruments and loops available, is this true?

4. Any other differences I should be aware of?

It's not so much the money, the $200.00, it's learning a whole new system and not knowing if it's worth it, just to get the additional loops and virtual instruments.

Thanks to all who respond!

Hi,
1. Yes the layout is the same, you don't have to learn a new DAW ,there is just more sections to navigate to,more toys to click on.

2.More intense and in depth version(the advantage is personal) depends on the kind of projects you are doing

3.Logic Pro x offers more plugins,editing tools,more loops,plugins..e.t.c...

4.They just did the biggest upgrade on May 12th after 10 years with more features, sounds, loops..Quick sampler, Auto sampler,Step sequencer, live loops ..it is freakin awesome so yes if you want to have the use of all this you must have the at least Mojave OS and up...with the latest Catalina it runs perfectly but be aware that some 3rd party plugins are not compatible, I use a few Native instrument plugins and so far no problems.

In conclusion: Many great albums are done with Garageband so is it worth it, again it is personal..it is like iMovie vs Finalcut Pro ..I use iMovie to edit my videos and if one day I feel the need that it is limiting my production then I will pay the $400.00 and upgrade to FCPro...but I have to say yes for $200.00 you can't beat it...by the way it is free trial right now for 3 months so you can try it.
I have used a lot of different DAWS since 1998 and since 2017 I have been using Logic and this is it for me, not going to change and learn a new one..I love it.

I hope this helps a little.
