I Need A Good Mixing Class!

Post by MusicBug » Mon Oct 26, 2020 9:59 am

Can anyone point me in the direction of a good, legitimate course in mixing that doesn't cost an arm and a leg and contains more useful information than fluff? I'm considering some courses at Berklee online, but they are at the very tip-top of my budget and may be more than I really need anyway.

Any advice or comments about classes you've actually taken would be especially helpful and very much appreciated. I'm floundering right now, awash in a sea of plugins.

Thanks.

I had found some great stuff for free on Youtube. Search for the exact issue you are having and somebody has usually covered it.

For paid sites, I have had great results with:

Macprovideo.com (not necessarily Mac they have stuff that is cross platform)
Groove3.com
Puremix.net

A google search will get you a bunch of possibles.

The best you can do is to find reference tracks that you like and is appropriate for your styles, and mix to see if you can be on par with those. Try remix your own songs again and again, and when you encounter issues, search the tube for the specific issues. No better course than that.

I've found the mixing courses I've seen, a bit tedious and rigid. Not enough in them to warrant the time.

If you must, try the free stuff from Musician on a Mission..

If you're attending the Rally online, I highly recommend the producing classes
M Nov 2 - 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm Production Master Class with Karl Richardson
T Nov 3 - 10:00 am – 11:00 am Mastering for Indie Musicians with Ronan Chris Murphy
W Nov 4 - 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm The Five Primary Mixing Tools with Fett

also look for any Taxi TV sessions with Rob Chiarelli, and those named above. Any feedback panels at the Rally and any Taxi TV where tracks receive a listen and some feedback are helpful.

I have found the sessions at https://mixwiththemasters.com to be useful, some are free, too

And there are some great youtube videos on a variety of subjects.. if you search 'how to mix instrumentals' you will find a host I imagine. Sometimes the advice is good and sometimes not, so make sure they are reputable producers.

I must say, though, that I learned much of my production chops right here on the forum by particiapting in Peer to Peer. Not only posting my own stuff for review and trying to make sense of the feedback, but by listening to other's work and reading the feedback and trying to 'hear' what was being pointed out.

Each time my work took a step forward, it was partially my 'ear', partially the quality of the 'sounds' I was able to buy or record, partially my hardware (good external soundcard, good mixing headphones, etc), and partially my ability to understand the sonic 'landscape' in it's 3D-ness, fill it appropriately with balanced sounds and feel satisfied with the overall sonic texture I had created.

HTH :)

I recommend Mike Seniors Book " Mixing Secrets For The Small Studio "

Get it on Kindle and it's easy to have by your side in front of your DAW. It's aimed at home studio users and how to work around the compromises that we all face instead of assuming you are in a Pro Studio like many mixing books.

It's very step by step, each chapter is the next part of the process so it goes from making the best of your room, to prepping the tracks before getting into the actual mixing. There are links to stems that you can use to follow along as well.

Being a book it should be the more budget friendly option but I can guarantee if you work through it your mixes will improve.

I agree with the previous posts, and would recommend WhyLogicProRules.com if you are by any chance using logic.

Bobby Owsinski has some good courses. A lot of useful information with minimal fluff. He even ran a couple of free ones this past summer, but it was more than I could remember so I bought a course on sale for about $100.

I finished the HOFA audio engineer diploma course (the company is more known for their plugins). It is not cheap but also not expensive for what you get. They have different programs you can enlist. They are based in Germany and you will see on their website that they are fully certified as an educational institution. At the time I took the course they were the only ones (apart from Berklee) offering a real online education + diploma and they were less expensive than Berkeley.

Hope this helps.

I've been pushing this guy's channel for his wide range of tutorials. The channel is called "dancetech". He does a wide range of tutorials on different plugins, Logic X etc. And he has some excellent series on things like EQ/Mixing and Compression. I've spent hours and hours watching his vids because it's like hanging out with a cool English chap you've known for years.

His primer on EQ/Mixing is awesome.. Helped me to internalize parts of the frequency spectrum, understand the Fletcher-Munson Curves, etc.

Here's his series on compresion/dynamics.
