I need a good vocal mic for $1000

Post by diogenes » Thu Sep 27, 2007 12:24 pm

A grand is my budget. My voice is between Johnny Cash, Eddie Vedder, Neil Diamond and Jim Morrison. I thinking of either a Mojave MA-200 or Bock 195 possibly even a Pearlman TM 1. Anyone have any evperience with these mics? Or other contenders in that range. Thanks

A few months back I purchased a Blue Bluebird mic and have been very happy with my decision ever since. My voice is also on the low end and I feel this mic works very well with it.When I bought it, I didn't have much more to spend for a pre, I settled with a Presonus Tube single for about $100. With your budget and the cost of a Bluebird (about $500), I know I would have got a better mic pre. (That said, the Presonus is doing a good job so far.)Al Franks

Thanks Al, I've been considering the Bluebird. If you ever decide to upgrade your pre, I can recommend the Great River ME-1NV (mostly because it's the one I have

Just a thought, rather than one mic for 1000, consider a pair of mics that you can use as a stereo pair.... I've been happy with my Rode mic and plan to get a second one when funding shows up..... ArkJack

If you don't have a good preamp, consider splitting your budget and getting one because it'll make whatever mic you get sound better. I suggest you try to find a store with a good return policy and then you can take some stuff home and try it and then return what doesn't sound good on your voice. You might be surprised at what works well and it might not be that 1K condenser. My wife just finished her new album and her producer did a mic shootout with his extensive mic collection and pretty high end pre-amp collection and the SM58 won for her voice!!!Good luck!Mazz
