I need a new keyboard...

Post by mikemichnya » Mon Sep 04, 2017 1:49 pm

My Roland JV 1080 died a few years ago, and I've been without a keyboard ever since. I read the posts on the old "Full piano action keyboard" thread from a couple of years back, but couldn't find anything more recent. I was hoping to take advantage of late Labor day sales to get a new weighted or hammer action keyboard for my studio that I can also play out with, but didn't really see anything that blew me away price wise EXCEPT for a Korg Kross 88 bundle for $700 from Kraft Music. It looks like a great deal on an older model. I'm just wondering if I should pull the trigger or spend double the price for a newer model with more bells and whistles.

The Korg Krome 88, Roland FA-08 and Yamaha MOXF8 are all in the $1700 range, which is a little more than I want to spend, but I don't see any 88 key GHA products for around $1000. Are the sound engines that much more advanced? Does anyone have experience with any of them?

Thanks for your help!
Best regards,

Michael, with ipods, ipads, and laptops, with large gigs of available memory, and even a music store selling them, https://www.sweetwater.com/c1010--iPods I'd think the trend was probably just buying a midi controller and an ipad?

I haven't looked into or researched any of this, lol, but I wouldn't think Sweetwater was merely branching into the phone business.

It seems to me like you are taking the onboard, built-in limited computer and replacing it with an external computer with more options and expandability and less proprietary software.

I would imagine there are ups and downs with either decision.

I don't know anybody that gigs with an iPad just yet, other than for setlists, lyrics, sheet music or charts. Maybe for EDM it could work, but you wouldn't need much of a keyboard for that. Last time I was shopping for a fully-weighted 88 for both live and studio use, I missed out, cuz the Casio Privia PX-5s hadn't been announced. Well-featured (and lightweight) as a stage piano, but also a more than decent workstation and master controller. Of course if you don't need fully weighted or all 88 you can get by cheaper, but the axe I mentioned goes for about a grand.

I bought the Casio PX-5S this summer for live gigs.
The feeling of the keys are amazing I must say (especially for being so light weighted)!

But, it's not easy to go from one tone to another tone (they call it tone, others call it program/sound). The tones, especially layered need some time to get fully loaded.
I had to buy a second keyboard so I can switch smoothly between sounds/tones.
