Re: I need to get better.
Quote:I haven't read every post so someone may have already said this, but I would like to throw in to record what you want to hear. Sounds simple enough (but we all recording is anything but simple), so in other words, you should like the sound of your guitar going to tape (or whatever your source may be). Don't record a practice amp and expect it to sound like a marshall stack. My opinion is that some of the best mixes are basically jsut adjusting faders without muhc eq and fx. If your resorting to a lot of eq your probably not happy with your sources, which is where it all starts. Just my two cents....it's all about the SOURCES. (ie=whats being recorded). It doesn't get said much better than this. Trash in = trash out. One of my mentors put it this way: If you record the thing right, mixing is just placing it in the stereo field. He could also mix on a pair of crappy radio shack speakers. Of course he had a ton of experience under his belt, so you have to: 1. Take the time to learn the basics. That doesn't mean you need to take a course, but you have to start with some sort of foundation.2. Listen and understand what your instruments sound like. That may seem like an obvious statement but you would be surprised how often I've heard a pristine piano sound reduced to mush with EQ.3 Experiment and learn. 4. Break all the rules. That's how engineering has advanced to where we are today. Otherwise all recordings would sound like a pristine Classical orchestra recording.Happy Recording/MixingCisco
