I was contacted: What does this mean?

Post by arska » Thu Jan 28, 2016 9:37 am

Hi there,

I got my first contact from music library company and the asked me the following:

"All files need to 24/48 kHz with a 30 second edit"

Q: What does that 30 second edit mean with a track? Does it just mean giving 30 seconds empty space in the beginning of track before music start?

Hi,

This means that they need a 30 second version of your song. TV shows rarely use the full version of your song, so some libraries will ask for a 10 second, 30 second and 60 second edit.

Okey, thanks for hint, so basically Id be wise to select i.e main melody / chorus line for that part? Since they didn't specify anymore detail about what exact section this would be...

And also the full length version supposingly...

Usually they want the 30 second edit to be able to stand on its own. In other words, don't just fade it at :30, which they can do themselves. I did exactly what you are saying, give them a good section of the main melody with an appropriate ending at :30.

As others noted, you want to give them 30 seconds of the track, usable by itself. Usually, it's best to use the same (or similar) button ending as you did for the full version.

One technique I've used (doesn't work for everyone and/or every song!!) is I work backwards from the full track's ending and see if close to 30 seconds from the end, there is a logical starting point. If the best point would make the track a little too long and there is a long tail at the end, I see if I can remove (fade) some of that tail sooner. If it's a little too short, sometimes I can bring in an instrument such as a drum beat or two at the front.

Good luck!
:D Casey

Casey, what Henrietta said. That's a great idea working backward from the end! I'm going to try it next time.
