I Wrote This Song for Cash

Post by Mark Kaufman » Wed Jan 16, 2008 8:23 am

Just finished this home recording today. Any and all critiques are welcome.I Wrote This Song for CashLately I've been thinking 'bout the Man in BlackHe hopped that train to Heaven and he won't be backBut sometimes when I listen to a new country tuneI find myself just wishin' it was Johnny and JuneHis voice was like a mighty oak, all shaky and lowIt made the man a fortune but you'd hardly knowHe sang his songs dressed in black and wore it for the sakeOf the unsung folk like you and me who never catch a breakSo I wrote this song for CashAnd sent it off to NashvilleDon't care if they trash itOr tell me it's a smash hitI'd just think it's funnyI didn't write this one for moneyI wrote this song for CashI wrote this song for CashMy daddy used to play him on the radioI always loved the music on his TV showNeil Young and Dylan, Derek and the DominoesA brave man takes you places where a coward never goesWhen he sang in Folsom Prison every word rang trueRing of Fire, I Walk the Line and A Boy Named SueI Been Everywhere and there was no song that he couldn't doAnd when he'd cry, cry, cry he could split your heart in twoSo I wrote this song for CashAnd sent it off to NashvilleDon't care if they trash itOr tell me it's a smash hitI'd just think it's funnyI didn't write this one for moneyI wrote this song for CashI wrote this song for Cash(Instrumental)I wrote this song for CashAnd sent it off to NashvilleDon't care if they trash itOr tell me it's a smash hitI'd just think it's funnyI didn't write this one for moneyI wrote this song for CashI wrote this song for Cash(Copyright 2008 by Mark Kaufman)

Nicely done lyle. The song has a definitive retro sound with the retro licks to boot. Very clever lyrics.

I play a reissue '57 Stratocaster that looks just like the one in this avatar, except for a maple neck...and it always wants to play this kind of twang. It can do most any sound or style you'd want to hear...but it always seems to lean toward the twang. It should really go to a good chickenpicker someday. Thanks for the kind words!-Lyle

Well done Lyle !I'm a big Johnny Cash fan myself !Lots of musical winks at his music through this tune and lyric !I had the honor to open for Johnny and June in 1985 at a Rodeo/Festival in Quebec, Canada ( I was 17 years old at the time ) 14,000 people showed up...And he and June were two of the nicest and most humble folks I ever met ( The great ones are often the nicest and kindest ! )...I still have his autograph on a hot dog wrapper...I'll always cherish that day ! And try to follow his example of what a great human being is.Thanks for posting !Cheers, Mike
