Indie rock listing S250522CK

Post by Phuovine » Fri May 09, 2025 8:32 am

I'm working on a track for the listing below and would really appreciate the input of the more experienced 8-)

-----------------------------------
Lots of MODERN ALT-ROCK INSTRUMENTALS are needed by a great Publisher with a super-impressive list of really BIG placements in Major-brand TV Commercials and TV shows!

This Publisher is hunting for several Mid-to-Up-Tempo Instrumentals in the general wheelhouse of the following examples:

"It's Amazing To Be Young" by Fontaines DC

"So Cold" by Balu Brigada

"Metaverse" by Cage The Elephant

Although the references have vocals, please submit Instrumentals only for this pitch.

Please submit modern Alternative Rock Instrumentals with great energy and a captivating sound that could work well for advertising and commercial placements! Your submissions should have engaging rhythms, infectious motifs, great production, solid musicianship, dynamic arrangements with forward development, and be mainstream enough to stay accessible to a fairly broad audience - you'd be wise to avoid anything too dark or aggressive here! Instrumentation that's in the general ballpark of the references will work best (electric guitar, bass, drums, etc.). Please make sure any virtual instruments or samples you use are high quality and not dated-sounding. Some non-lyrical vocals like "ahs," "woahs," etc., could potentially work here, but are by no means required. Please do NOT submit full vocal Songs for this opportunity.

Submissions should be about 2 minutes long, give or take. Non-faded, buttoned/stinger endings will work best for this pitch.
---------------------------------

I've actually listened to Fontaines D.C.'s album Romance a lot and I like stuff like this so it's pretty much in my wheelhouse even though I've never really tried to make this kind of music before. I'm pretty confident about my rhythm section and the guitars but the keys and strings are always a bit of a pain and I don't want to get the dreaded "sounds dated" feedback because of them. This is my first time using these particular strings and I tried to make sure they sound expressive but I'm not experienced in that field. Although, they do use all kinds of retro sounding keys and strings (like mellotrons) in this genre. Now this might be a stupid thing to worry about but I've been listening to stuff that gets forwarded and I only hear perfectly quantized virtual drums in those tracks when all I do is imperfect live drums. Will it make me stand out positively or negatively in general?

It sounds good, drums are a bit hot for my taste. If anything holds you back it might be the developmental arc they seem to be looking for, not a lot of that in your track, even at the breakdown toward the end the drums continue with the same groove, I feel like it has a bit of that "stick of butter" syndrome (referring to the look of the waveform).

As far as live drums, if they make you stand out negatively to someone you're not a good fit for that person/company anyway. I think the more you stand out the better. AI will be making all the cookie cutter stuff soon enough anyway.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the feedback! As a drummer I tend to put the drums quite upfront and that's something I'm trying hard to learn away from. I'll check more into them.

I'm very surprised about the arc comment, though. It's not structured exactly like in Matt's Ace - king - Queen -method but pretty close. It's more like king - Queen - Ace - Jack and a small build-up to finish. There's a pretty big difference between the king and the ace sections and quite a lot of drum action before the more sparse jack ending. Maybe I'll have to make the dynamic changes more apparent with some automation.

Btw, I've heard many tracks where the waveform might seem like a sausage but it still sounds dynamic and lively. Music is not a visual art. But I admit I pushed the limiter quite far :D

Yeah I agree, the look of the waveform should have nothing to do with how you hear it, I only mentioned it because I've heard music supervisors say they're influenced by the way the wave form looks and they use that "stick of butter" analogy.

Yeah, I've heard that too. It's another habit I've developed from making music for Spotify and other streaming services. Should be easy to just do less, right?

You were absolutely right about the drums, Ethan! I pulled them back a bit and also checked the individual shell balance and adjusted the reverb too. Now it fits better with the overall light and hopeful mood of the track. Thank you!

Here's the new version (and don't worry, I won't submit it with "version 2" in the title):

Just dropping the four tracks I was able to finish for this listing here:

https://www.taxi.com/members/jnb8FmKdQC ... ockers-inc
https://www.taxi.com/members/jnb8FmKdQC ... -the-world
https://www.taxi.com/members/jnb8FmKdQC ... gly-lovely
https://www.taxi.com/members/jnb8FmKdQC ... -detention

I'm quite happy with the results even though I could've mixed Center Of Detention a bit better if I had the time. It still takes me way too long to produce one track because I use mostly real live instruments and for example use pedals and amps to come up with all the various guitar tones. I do too many takes and too many mix versions but I'm sure over time I'll get faster and more efficient at this.

Now I'm super tired as it's half past two in the morning over here

I got 2/4 forwarded so pretty good. The other forwarded track was the one I had the least faith in but I get why it got through.

I'm now on holiday in Croatia with my family so I'm having a break from music for a few weeks. Summertime is going to be slower anyway because of all the stuff I have to get done in the yard and at our cottage but the Finnish summer is short.

Congrats! I also got a forward on this listing, it was nice to see your name on the forwards blog!
