I wrote this piece as an insrumental (as opposed to an instrumental cue). Any recommendations for improvement? i have not composed this in response to a listing, just trying something different and experimenting with various VST instruments.

I'm curious. Why do you call this (structure-wise) an instrumental and not a cue?

Well, now see you made me curious enough to listen. Structurally I hear AABC AABC' tag so I would agree with the OP that it is not a cue form. It may be just a squinch shy of being a 'fully realized' instrumental piece; maybe another contrasting section in between the first half and last half, or a contrasting section after, with a return could be added to spruce it up. After all, 2 1/2 minutes for an instrumental is just a teasekarafinman wrote: ↑Thu Nov 18, 2021 8:07 amI'm curious. Why do you call this (structure-wise) an instrumental and not a cue?

Improvements? as far as VSTs go, some high-quality ambience would go a long way to placing the ensemble in a real space. Maybe a fuller-sounding piano. There was a RR session on adding expression to instrumental lines; adding some swells at a range of periods (8 bars, 2 bars, etc) as well as at a micro level (like vibrato) will breathe life into the mix.
Compositionally I'd consider some melodic motion in 16th notes to break up the plodding 8th-note motion. I like the wistful, longing nature of the piece, so I wouldn't go too far - just enough to keep the listener's interest (especially if deciding to extend the form). Another thought: if it is all MIDI at this point, maybe some rubato - subtle tempo changes - would help with a "real feel".

Thank you AlanHall and Telefunken for your comments. I will try to incorporate your suggestions into a new version of the track.
