I know what you guys are saying & I agree to some degree. I'm only saying that pop music in general seems to be lacking any kind of edge lately, which is what Amy seems to have. I'm really not a fan of hers but given the options of what's out there........Young people are listening to music that I grew up on. I think that says a lot about the shape of the industry these days. Rap & Hip Hop were supposed to be the new Rock & Roll, but even that has become watered down & frivolous. WadeAnd Amy looked messed up; I don't care what her publicist says.

squids,Did you mean pitch as in singing off pitch?I really think it's all gimmick these days; the "musician" title is only a label for the media outlet they inhabit. All through the show they were saying that "Amy Winehouse will be here to perform later! She'll be performing, don't worry!"So my wife waited to see what the fuss was about. When Winehouse did her thing, my wife sat on the couch with a such a puzzled frown trying to make some sense of it all.

Guys,After a certain age (hey I'm there too ), it's natural to rail against today's artist and long for those of our youth. Rock'n'roll hasn't changed, it's just that we cannot stand the noise and the gimmicks anymore . Frankie Avalon, Pat Boone, The Monkeys...Common it wasn't all about talent and pipes in the old days Vermeer

I was stumped by Winehouse's 'success' at the Grammys.Although I've always have been a bit sceptical of the Best New Artist award. The ten recipients prior to Winehouse were:Carrie UnderwoodJohn LegendMaroon 5EvanescenceAlicia KeysShelby LynneChristina AguileraLauryn HillPaula ColeLeAnne RimesAt least half of the above leave me cold. And a couple of others don't even do that Liam

See,This was just the type of thing we were discussing in the "The good old days of music!" thread. I think windowman and myself share the same outlook.Quote:I know what you guys are saying & I agree to some degree. Rap & Hip Hop were supposed to be the new Rock & Roll, but even that has become watered down & frivolous. That's what I was thinking too. Why are the young people interested in listening to those old tunes? They should be listening to the music of their generation. Instead, a good deal of 'em are listening to music we grew up on. Why is that? They didn't necessarily grow up on that, unless their parents played the heck out of old tunes while they were growing up, and that's all they heard. But... I'm not gonna' get inta' all that again....ibanez468

Quote:Why are the young people interested in listening to those old tunes?Rubbish Young people have iPods + The Internet with huge memories and the ability to skip to the good stuff right away. They have access to the best songs of all times, not just the latest hits. In my days, we had limited access to music and could only buy the stuff that was there at the local mall and K-Tel compilations from the mail - Yuk! If I had the choice they have now, I too would be listening to the best of "all time". Keep adding 50-100 great songs every years and we too in 20 years will be listening to the past.OK, flame me now Vermeer

vermeer,You hit upon a critical idea: the best music of all time is rapidly becoming instantly available 24 hours a day...probably for free or a nominal cost."Old music", new music...it's all the same. It's all "now" music. And that increases the competition for songwriters and musicians creating "new content"! Now we are competing with the best that ever lived and wrote and played an instrument. It's a new playing field, thanks to Internet distribution and online streaming on demand. In 1975 I didn't really have to compete with great 1950s music...it wasn't easily available. You had to special order it.

I think you guys are forgetting something. There are many different roles to be played in the music industry. Musicians, Singers, Producers, Songwriters, performers, entertainers etc... No one said you have to be able to do it all.Sure, Amy Winehouse would not win on American Idol, neither would Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Van Morrison, Robert Plant or thousands of other singers i love to listen to. The thing is, BEFORE Amy W. was in all the papers smoking crack and being 100% insane, she made a very good record. I heard a lot about it and bought her album about 9 months ago. It's great, has a very motown vibe, but definitely modern. Now I am not a fan of her persona, and i have not seen any of her liver performances, but I think with the right team(producers/band) she can be great. As for the grammys, i stopped paying attention to that a long time ago.

Quote:And that increases the competition for we songwiters and musicians creating "new content"! Now we are competing with the best that ever lived and wrote and played an instrument.Yes! This is a tremendous time for indie songwriters because we're back to the era of the best singles. No one has the patience to sit though an album worth of fillers just to hear the one or two good songs on an album. That era is over. Now, artists (including Ms. Winehouse) are increasingly turning to outside songwriters to get their edge. No hit, no fun BTW, people don't remember but Milli Vanelli had two Diane Warren hit songs in their debut album. Getting the best songs will always rule...until you have to sing live at the grammies Vermeer
