I feel very lucky and blessed to be able to say that this year I have already made more than that figure from music composition and production, with no live touring, no agent, no record label, etc. The vast majority of that comes from writing for video games. Previously, I was earning a steady income from libraries and small-time custom work, album sales (I have six original albums), custom sounds and sample libraries.

Are you the same Zircon who made the intro track for FL Studio 9? If you are, wow! That song is awesome.

Haha, thanks guys! Yes, I'm the same zircon. There's only one other musical "zircon" in existence, some metal band that AFAIK hasn't done too much. Which reminds me, I need to trademark my name/logo...

I had the pleasure of hanging with zircon at the GDC earlier this year. We had a beer or two at the G.A.N.G Hang! Don't be a stranger man!

Who taught you how to use that program so well?

I still do not know how you knew how to use some of the features of FL Studio. Is that all you use?

Haha, likewise Mazz :-) Definitely looking forward to GDC next year, too. I've mostly been locked away in my studio just working on this and that, a mix of production music, mastering jobs, sample libraries (almost done with a Japanese collection), music videos, that sort of stuff, and I just recently got a nice PSP gig that I look forward to starting.

Yadgyu: Yes, I use FL Studio for everything I do, start to finish. And I mix 100% on headphones if you can believe that. :P I learned to use FL over time; I picked it up in 2004 or so and just gradually became better with it. Collaborating with other people helps, as does watching tutorial videos to learn new features, tips and techniques. I've posted some of these myself at http://www.youtube.com/zirconST if you're interested.

Cool!!!

Do you and your wife collaborate with other producers/musicians? If so, maybe we could put something together. I would like to collab just for the heck of it. I think that I could learn a lot from you guys.

What's important to understand about tv/film placements is that 1-it's a numbers game (you'll probably need at least 300-350 active tracks to get to the 40k level)

Hey Matt,
Just wondering if the 300 tracks you mentioned are full songs (2 minutes or more) or does that also include bumpers, stings and alternate mixes of the same songs.

Reason I ask is because I've read different sides of this in other sites. Some say it's full songs, other say it's a combination.

Thanks,

300-350 FULL songs, not cuts. If you're including edits, then that basically divides the total number of tracks by 4-8, and even if you're writing awesome songs, $40k/yr on something like 75-100 individual tracks is not realistic.

Yeah, individual compositions, not counting alternate mixes and/or edits as separate "tracks".

I think $125/year/song is a pretty good ballpark average. Taking into account better and lesser performing libraries and better and lesser performing styles.
Of course if you're lucky enough to write one of the hottest styles for one of the hottest libraries, you could do way better.
Conversely you can also do way worse... ;)
