Is it possible...

Post by coxnvox » Fri Sep 14, 2007 11:24 am

...to get a pop song forwarded with just an acoustic/vocal demo?I ask because I thought this song was right on for this listing, and I think it's catchy as heck. It's not very well performed (by me on guitar) and the singing is definitely pitchy, but the words are very similar to a lot of radio stuff today, (Kelly Clarkson, Ashlee Simpson especially) and the melody is simple like they asked for. Here's the listing:A Hit Producer/Composer/Songwriter with many cuts and film/TV credits needs a MODERN POP-ROCK SONG with simple melodies and contemporary Pop lyrics a la Kelly Clarkson, Natasha Bedingfield, Pink, Evanesence, and Ashlee Simpson for a 19-year old Female artist he’s currently producing. This singer doesn’t have huge diva-like vocals, so a song with a simpler melodic range will work best for her and this project. Lyrically, please stay away from Christian themes. He wants general, universal, very relateable lyrics - safe, but not bland. All tempos are OK. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS ONLY - NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI. And the song is called "I'm the Girl" on my Taxi page here:http://www.taximusic.com/hosting/home.p ... t=coxnvoxI would love to hear some opinions on the song. I think this could be produced into a top-notch pop song, but I don't have the funds to do it! :>)Thanks, all.kerry

I think you MIGHT get a forward with a simple demo if (a) it really made the hook, which would be a killer, shine undeniably and (b) it was well performed. Pitchy vocals are a deal breaker. On another thread Matto was reiterating that your demo is like a job interview. A pitchy vocal or poor guitar work is like wearing torn jeans to the interview.Remember you are competing with great demos from tons of folks who have mastered the art of home recording or have already made a studio CD. Producers and labels have no reason to bother with amateurish demos. This song has a good hook. Also, on another thread Mazz mentioned how it's best to get 1-2 pro-critiques and once you have the song where you think it's where it should be, invest in a pro demo. I know... it isn't easy and it isn't cheap.Best of luck! Casey

Thanks, Casey. I'm getting a custom critique on it and will probably spring to have a full-fledged demo at some point.Later,kc

If the listing had a critique, I would have submitted it just to get the feedback. My advice to you would be to either send it for custom critique or get Jason Blume to critique it. Either way you will get really good feedback which will help you. I like the voice on the demo, but it does occasionally sound a little unsure. I also would mix it with the voice slightly more forward (or soften the guitar)... and I would some of those 'uh ah' pop harmonies in the background to help the listener "hear" the groove and the pop potential. But, as I say, I'm not a pop expert but that's my take on it Don't worry if you got a return this time... there will be other opps.Hummin'bird
