Is this a tension cue?

Post by ryanlehotay » Tue Jul 04, 2023 8:26 pm

Hi everyone,

I am looking at submitting to the following listing: LOTS of SOUND DESIGN/SFX INSTRUMENTALS are needed by a hard-working Music Library that’s always hustling and landing placements for TAXI members in TV Shows, Film projects, and Video Game Trailers!

Send in well-composed Sound Design Instrumentals that could create an overall dark vibe and feel. Your submissions should feature Sound Design elements and sound effects (like guns, cars, explosions, etc.) to create pieces with plenty of forward momentum, interest, and dynamics. Some additional instrumentation is okay as well, but please don't overdo it! We think there is room to get creative with this pitch as it is open to a range of moods – from tension, to epic, to anywhere in-between. Your productions should be polished, and any virtual sounds or samples you use need to be high-quality and cutting-edge.

Does this track seem to fit?
How is the production sound?
Any advice to really have a chance of a forward?

Thank you for taking the time to listen!

I'd say it's a tension sounding track, but not a sound design track as requested. The listing specifies "Your submissions should feature Sound Design elements and sound effects (like guns, cars, explosions, etc.)."

I noticed that the track has some rhythmic/timing problems, the pulsing patch sets a tempo, but later in the track some instruments come in sounding off of the beat to me. That same pulsing patch does get a little loud during the track compared to the other instruments. I would tuck it further back in the mix, and you might consider adding a bass drone eventually to thicken things up in the second half. The ending is a little sloppy as well, needs to be cleaner, more specific as to when it ends, and the audio gets cut off at the very end.

An interesting track to continue working on, but I would not submit it given what they are looking for.

Thank you Paulie for the helpful feedback. I really appreciate you taking the time to listen and give me an honest critique. I'm going to dig in and keep working on it. I just really needed some direction. -Ryan
