Is this track on target for National Geographic?

Post by brianleewheat » Mon Dec 09, 2013 10:41 am

This the first time I have tried to do a "National Geographic" cue. Feedback on this track welcome and very much appreciated.

Listing:
Rapidly growing Production Music Library needs Composers who can create Mid-to-Up Tempo INSTRUMENTALS for REALITY TV Shows and Documentaries that focus on nature and the outdoors. This company's been working with a ton of TAXI composers and artists, and is excited to hear more! Quoting the source: "I need instrumentals that are organic and natural sounding. Cool percussion driven cues or Instrumentals with a dramatic flair will work best, as long as there's an inherent natural and outdoorsy feel to the track. Pieces that start out small, build and crescendo, with button endings will be ideal." Watch some shows on Nat Geo to get an idea of what will work, and AVOID swampy cues you'd hear on shows like Duck Dynasty. Instrumentals with interesting sounds like Kalimbas and Djembes could be cool if you don't get too ethnic. Organic sounding tracks that build to driving, pulsing beats as you uncover the deep dark mysteries of the natural world are what they need. Episodes of Survivor might offer some musical clues as well! The company offers a standard work for hire package where you'll be paid an upfront fee for your tracks. The company will retain 100% exclusive ownership of the master and publishing rights and you'll get the writer's share. They pay an upfront fee of $750-$1,500 per package depending on the amount of tracks they commission. They need composers who can consistently deliver 5-10 completed tracks per package. Broadcast quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine). You must own 100% of your master recording and composition to pitch for this. Please submit one to three instrumental online or per CD. All submissions will be screened on a Yes/No basis - No full critiques. Submissions must be received no later than Tuesday, December 10, 2013. TAXI #Y131210IN

Brian this track popped up on my soundcloud stream this morning and the first thing I thought was I wonder if he's going to go after that National Geographic listing. I watched a couple of outdoor shows last night on NBC Sports TV and this was right in that veinI think you nailed it man nothing but positive feedback here submit it.

Peace,

Thanks for the feedback. I am worried that the beginning sounds "too ethnic" which the listing specifically says not to do. Thoughts?

I think your percussion is ethnic but not too ethnic. Besides, you have brass at the end. What could be less ethnic? Also, the listing suggested kalimba and djimbe so they have to be expecting that style of percussion.

Sounds like a winner to me! I didn't really hear anything that screamed "too ethnic". Just good pulse-pounding adventure!

Ok. Thanks...appreciate the affirmation. I will submit...and forget!

Another question: For these types of listings where they are looking to license bundles of 5 - 10 songs, can I get by just submitting just one song or should I submit three to show them I have several? I would rather submit just one to save the $10.

Hi Brian,

I like the drama of the track a lot and I think you're well on the way with this one. What's really smart of you are the changes every 4 or 8 bars - I know music production companies love that because music editors want to have the option for their work ... Two things I would think about. The bongos (or whatever they are) come in great but the pattern stays the same throughout the track and makes it a little less organic. Maybe change the pattern somewhere along the line to give it more of a "real" feel. And the crescendo is working towards something ... I wish it took a little longer and got a little more cluttered and exciting at the end with a tighter button ending.

I hope this is helpful ... you know what you're doing and best wishes for success!!!

Terry

Thanks for the great insightful feedback! I made some changes based on your input, specifically to the end, that I would love you to hear and let me your thoughts.

Thanks so much!
